In which he's still frickin' awake

Lately, there have been two things that have been not allowing me to get to sleep when we sleep away from home.

1) Kid[1] does not know how to go to sleep. He's 6 years old, and he's done this thing nearly every time. He is hard to get calmed down, and that I can understand: being in a hotel or at grandma's house can be exciting. But after that begins the trouble.

It almost sounds like he has little nightmares. He'll lay in bed - either on an air mattress at his grandma's (my mom's) house in our shared bedroom or in the shared queen-sized bed - and after a few minutes, he'll say something like "No, no!" or "I don't want to!" or "Leave me alone!" or similar things. This will continue for 2 to 4 hours before (it seems) he wears himself out and finally goes to sleep.

He might be doing this at home - in fact, we know he does - but it's not nearly to the same degree as he does it when we're on the road. I fear for what our vacation will be like.

2) I appear to have tendonitis in my right upper arm which causes my arm to ache. I've not been good about doing the exercises my doctor told me to do in the 3 minutes he spent with me, so that's my fault.

I'm a light sleeper, and I need things to be quiet, dark, and cool for me to get to sleep. I realize this makes me sound wimpy or makes me sound prissy, but that's how I am. When Kid[1] does what he does, it's hard to calm down. It's nothing he tries to do, but it really gets to me (as is much of what he does, but that's another story).

I fear for our vacation to Colorado we have coming up this month. When I don't get the sleep I need, I get bitchy, not only because I'm tired, but because I'm upset I didn't get the sleep I need. I also have to do most of the driving because exwxgirl will likely need to keep up on her homework. The kids can't drive, so I guess that's my job.

I almost wonder if I have to dope myself up with the strongest over the counter pain killer (or just do the damn exercises) and invest in a good set of ear plugs.

As for Kid[1]'s problem, I have no idea what to do.
