here is something weird. when i proposed that panic at the disco would be vampire weekend had they been east coast kids, i had many more reasons than i offered at the time. it's not just that the songs have that overly english lit vocabulary quality to them (hello, ryan as a writing major at emerson college, anyone?) or quirky instrumentation (brendon at berklee college of music, obvs). it's that they were a band that found success primarily because of online buzz, got very internet-famous and then critic-famous very quickly, and for their trouble were hated/derided/written off by many reactionary what's cool is no longer cool types.

anyway then in their stoned mtv hits thing brendon and ryan picked a vampire weekend video (i assume "cape cod kwassa kwassa" given they mentioned it being beachy) and so i went to look it up, because somehow i never saw any of them. in fact, then i realized, i'd never seen any of vampire weekend at all. i had almost no idea how old they were or what they looked like (generically white semi-pretty boys).

but look how much this is just exactly the kind of video that spencer would think was hilarious:
