When Gonzalo first met Fernando, he felt a strong sense of dislike. He was immediately alarmed (why was it just dislike, and not hatred?). Fernando was wearing casual clothes and the most smug expression Gonzalo had ever set eyes on. They shook hands, each one squeezing harder and harder until a club official stepped forward (wary of the fake smiles plastered on the new boys' faces).

Gonzalo walked into the Real Madrid locker room, with Fernando by his side. There was a sudden hush as everyone sized up the newcomers. Gonzalo felt the sudden urge to run from the room, run as far away from the Bernabéu as he could. But before he could move a muscle, he felt something on his hand. He looked down to see Fernando's hand wrapped around his own. Suddenly, Gonzalo didn't feel frightened.

Weeks later, Gonzalo found himself laughing and joking with Fernando. Their rivalry wasn't entirely forgotten - merely put aside for the moment. Until Fernando asked suddenly, "Will you play for France or Argentina?"
"Does it matter to you?"
"Yes." Fernando said, patting him on the back.
"Argentina."

Laughing and joking soon turned to getting wasted together, every Friday night. Gonzalo wondered how a 'midget' like Fernando could drink more than him. He even asked him this. He never got an actual reply, just a pat on the ass.
The very next morning, Gonzalo woke up, naked and sweaty, next to a sleeping Fernando Gago.
"Fernando?" Gonzalo poked the sleeping figure.
"Mmm?"
"What happened last night?"
"You tell me, tiger."
Gonzalo jumped out of bed and rushed out of the room, only to return a second later for his clothes.

Gonzalo was too shy (or was it afraid?) to speak to Fernando for a few days, until Fernando asked him (on Friday), "Are we still on for tonight?"
"Of course," Gonzalo said, without hesitation.
