I took my car into the local VW dealership this morning for a safety recall inspection. (It's fine.) Whoever picks the radio station that plays in the showroom has great taste: when I dropped the car off, the PA was playing the Smiths' "How Soon Is Now"; when I walked in to pick the car up, "This Corrosion" was on.
I was thinking while I waited that this must be the goth VW dealership, when the Sisters of Mercy faded out and David Bowie's "Fashion" came on. I glanced over at the showroom floor, which is partially visible from the service department, and saw one of the salesmen, a chunky towheaded guy, gyrate his hips to the beat, then whip off his tie, sling it between his legs, and ride it like a champ. I watched in bemusement until he stopped and walked out of sight.
When I left the building to retrieve my car that was being brought around for me, I made sure to exit via the showroom. "So when's the next show?" I asked Mr. Chippendale, who had put his tie back on.
He thought for a moment. "The 28th," he said.
Okay. "You gonna give us a little dance?"
"Oh! That show!" He pinkened. "I thought you meant my comedy show. I'm sorry. I didn't know you saw that. I hope you aren't scarred for life."
I laughed. "It's a good song. I don't blame you. What's this about a comedy show?" Turns out he's doing stand-up at a comedy club I've been to down the street from the dealership. I won't be able to go. Too bad. He is a man of many talents.
