[cheesy] On the beautiful people.

So, a guy I know is on the cover of today's issue of BusinessWeek. One more remarkable person doing remarkable things at a remarkable company - and at a remarkable university!

Of course, not everybody at Google, or at UW, who is doing marvelous things is going to get rich and famous for it. I probably won't get famous once I'm an attorney, trying to follow in others' footsteps. I know some amazing lawyers, and some of them are well-known and some aren't. And money and fame are often mutually exclusive, among that lot.

It doesn't matter. What matters is that you make the highest, best use of yourself. K wrote me a letter once where he said he'd read somewhere else that the reason fans get crushes on rock stars and actors is because people are at their most beautiful when they're doing what they're best at. And maybe that means lawyering, or maybe cooking, or maybe it means raising your kid well, so that when she's grown up she'll be one of the only people in her social circle who don't hate their parents. But every night, you fall asleep, in the spotlight or in obscurity, confident that you're doing what you do best, and giving it your all. And others recognize that. So when someone tells you "you're a rock star" or "you're gorgeous," they're saying "thank you." Thanks for giving your best. And please don't burn out.

uw, life, work, famous, friends, google
