Author's Note: This is my first fic for Game of Silence. I fell in love with the show and of course it was canceled. Oh no beta other than me and my lovely hemingway app page. :D
He sat straight up and looked around the room.
Her side of the bed was cold and empty. He thought she was there with him. He thought he felt her presence but realized it was only a dream. He wished his life was a dream and he could wake up. He wished everything would go back to the way it had been months earlier when they were happy. Those days when they were planning their wedding. Back to the days before his past caught up to him.
The funeral was nice enough as funerals go. Many of her friends and colleagues were there sharing their condolences. They tried to help but it was no use. Nothing seemed to help. They didn't know him. They weren't the ones to help him. The only people in his life that can help him feel any sort of normal are the ones sitting downstairs waiting for him. They're waiting for him to wake up, walk downstairs and let them know he would be okay for the night. But would he? Would he ever be okay again for an entire night? Could he be okay for even an hour?
She stood in the doorway and saw him sitting up in his bed. In the bed he shared with her. The bed she'd thrown him out of when they came barging back into his life. "Jackson?" She whispered. "Are you okay?"
He wanted to say yes. He wanted to say that he'd had a nice, peaceful sleep filled with wonderful dreams but he couldn't lie to her. He was through with lying to everyone. "No."
She walked into the room and sat on the chair by the bed. "I'm sorry." She looked around and added, "I wish I had something else to say other than I'm sorry but I don't. I don't know what to say to make any of this better for you."
"Just knowing you're here helps even if I can't see that yet. All of you. You were my best friends and I turned my back. Maybe none of this would have happened if I hadn't run away. We all had goals and dreams of our own and I left, never to return until things went to hell again." He ran his hands through his hair. "If I stayed things could have been different."
"No. Look at you. Look at everything around you. You got out. You lived. You survived. You worked hard and you're a successful lawyer. That is what you needed to do. Things happened the way they did because we ended up needing someone to help and that person was you. If you had stayed it all could have been worse. So much worse."
He shook his head. "Marina would be alive."
"It's not your fault, Jackson. It's not. There was a chain of events set into motion years ago. Before you went to Quitman because those names on the list. They were there before y'all went in. Some were after but there were boys before you that disappeared so this was a long time in the making." She moved to the bed and sat beside him. "If it wasn't us it would have been someone else. They could not keep getting away with all this. Sure, it may have taken longer but I believe it would have happened no matter what."
"She's right." Gil and Shawn were standing in the doorway listening. "That list. It was full of names from before, during and after so it was just a matter of time. I think Amy would have come forward. And if it all came out the same way, and they still killed her, her son would have found the papers."
"But Marina would be alive."
"Diana was at your firm, even before everything happened, so her part in this already involved you and Marina. I believe she has more to do with this than any of us might have imagined."
"She was the last to see Marina alive. Was it her car speeding away?" Jackson stood. "Oh my god, was it her? Marina was her friend. She thought she was her friend." Tears poured from his eyes.
Gil crossed the room and put his arm around Jackson in an attempt to help him stand. He led him back to the bed and focused on his friend when Jackson finally sat down. "We have to think about this. We need to be smart. You're always saying we have to be smart about things. Especially now, if that's what you think, we have to be smart and find proof before we go after anyone. For anything."
"It was her. It had to be her." He couldn't stop sobbing even when his best friends wrapped him in their arms.
"We're here, Jackson. We'll figure this out. Everything will be okay."
He heard the words but had no idea how any part of this nightmare would ever be okay.
