Author's Note: Two birds, one stone. :D I fell in love with this prompt and thought it could be the perfect one to use to jump into the pool as well. I don't think I'm all that thrilled with it, but then again, I am my own worst critic and rarely like anything I write! LOL No beta other than grammarly and the Hemingway app. It's my very first and possibly last Blue Bloods fic but I adore Jamie and Eddie.
She did not want to be one of those girls. She saw the type every single day on the job. She swore to herself years earlier that she would never be one of those women that would ever need a man to get her through something. And yet, here she was, staring at her phone, wondering if she should text him or call him. "Neither. I'm fine. I've got this."
Two hours later she realized she didn't have it and now it was one of those moments where she had to decide if the text or the phone call would wake him up quicker. Not to mention the fact that she had to decide if either one would put him in a horrible mood because he was not great to be around if he was in a bad mood. "I'll text him. Then if he sleeps through it, I'm sure I can get to sleep."
Thirty minutes later she sent the text. Twenty seconds after that, he replied with his usual, "I'll be right there." Eddie wasn't expecting the phone call on the way to her apartment asking if she needed anything.
"No" she choked out as she fought the tears that she thought were long since finished falling. She wanted to add 'only you', but she didn't.
"I'll be there soon."
"Okay," she managed before she ended the call. Eddie wanted to throw the phone. Or throw something against the wall because she hated being one of those girls.
He knocked on the door and waited, the flower in one hand and beer and food in the other.
Eddie opened the door and smiled her best smile. "Hey."
"Hi." Jamie held out his hand with the flower. "I thought this might help."
She fought back the tears and nodded. "Thanks."
"No problem." He held up his other hand. "Thought this might help, too."
"Better."
He waited for her to move from the doorway so he could walk inside and when she didn't he said, "are we eating in the hallway?"
She laughed. "No. Sorry. Come in."
"Sit and I'll bring it over."
"No, I'll help." She didn't have a proper vase so she found an empty bottle, added water and put the flower in it. "It's pretty."
"I thought so." He grabbed two plates, paper towels and set the food on the counter. "What would you like?"
"All of it looks good."
"A variety. Sounds good." He put the food on their plates and handed one to her. "Now will you go sit down?"
"I'm sorry, Jamie."
"Sorry for what?"
"Sorry for texting you so late. Sorry for asking you to come over." She sighed. "Sorry for being..."
"Don't you dare say it. It's fine. I was awake so it's no big deal."
"No big deal?"
"You asked me and here I am."
"It was such a pathetic text."
"Not pathetic."
"Are you kidding? It was. Read it again and then tell me it didn't sound pathetic."
"I just really need to have you here right now does not sound pathetic after what you've been through, Eddie. You know I'd drop everything, no matter what time, day or night, to come over here and make sure you're okay." He wanted to tell her more, to open up, but he knew he shouldn't. "It's what partners do for each other."
"Yeah, partners."
"And friends."
She smiled as she took a bite of her food. "Thanks, Jamie."
"Anytime, Eddie. Anytime."
