Well, after a long night of thought and little sleep, I decided that I am probably not going to ORC.
I have to tell you, as soon as I heard that Billy was going to be there I was ready to call the airlines, hotel and Creation. But common sense prevailed. I mean I really, really want to see Billy, but there are other factors.
1) Family - hubby and I are planning to go somewhere on vacation later this year, possibly Disneyworld. Will is old enough now that he would appreciate Disney or some other vacation and that is a priority.
2) Finances - I just bought a long-awaited laptop (something of a necessity these days). That cost a bit of money. Plus, we're hoping to buy a house within the next few months, and the above mentioned vacation. So finances are a concern. The cost of the convention (airfare, hotel, tickets, meals, souvenirs) could easily top $1000.00.
3) Work - My busiest days at work are the 1st, 5th and 10th of every month. Since the 10th is a Saturday, that day's workload moves to the 12th. The exhaustion of attending the convention that weekend would make it very difficult for me to do my job on that Monday, and that is presuming that the trip wouldn't affect the CFS and make me too ill to even go to work.
4) Friends - I'm really not sure if any of my friends are going. I'm not exactly a social butterfly and the idea of getting on a plane alone (my first flight), going to a strange city, and rooming with people I really don't know kind of unnerves me. This in itself wouldn't keep me from going, but combined with the other reasons. And to be honest with you, my intention of going to a convention would be mostly to spend time with my friends than to spend time in a cattle-call, waiting for my 30 seconds with Billy so that he can autograph a picture for me, and have him forget I even exist when the next person comes along with their 30 seconds of paid time.
5) Fans - I've heard about the crazy toothless lady with her daughter, and the Frodo-doll lady. I don't know how much they would bug me. However, there is one person who is going that I would rather not see at all. This person has pretty much ruined my fandom of Billy, a fact to which I'm sure she would be extremely proud of. One less fan in 'competiton' with her. (Sorry for the bitchiness). I shouldn't let one person ruin things for me, but I have no doubt my enjoyment of the convention would definitely be tainted.
Now, things could change. I could think about this some more and decide that yes, it would be difficult, but I could still go. I doubt it, though.
