Werder Bremen v 1. FC Köln : 4-2

Aug 28, 2010 23:30

Groundhog Day reverse!! The game started like the last against Cologne somehow ended... Frings, the one-trick-pony, showed us his penalty skills (again!) - this time not left lower corner - so Mondragon was considerably confused to not clear the ball properly.

The penalty (32. min) was a result of a common collaborative project - Marin getting fouled by that Petit (pulling AND kicking) and once again coldblooded Frings was executing his dodgy trick. Frankly, it's getting a bit boring ;) I think he should score properly, remember Wolfsburg...? On the other hand, he might become Bremen's top scorer if the teamwork between Marin, cast as eternal victim of cruel fouls and Frings, as reliable avenger, remain as fruitful. Though I do like that Frings has - up to know - an impressive 18 penalties scored under his belt (my counting). In that respect, he is pretty fuckin incredible, for as a viewer/fan you feel secure and comforted as a baby - knowing nothing - NOTHING - in the world can go wrong once daddy Frings strolls to that penalty point.

On a side note - Marin cuddling with Frings afterwards was CUTE, as was Frings cuddling Arnautovic! I could not find any pics of that, sigh... Also, the fans totally celebrated Marin today - I was really glad, for sometimes they forget him. I think we need more of that! Like Pizarro and Hugooooo get attention, rightly so, for the obvious: scoring -- but Marin's work is a bit underappreciated at times... Just sayin'

Here is daddy Frings pretending his name is Podolski.

Here they are together on the pitch.

Here is Wiese cuddling with Podolski - they've probably bonded in those long, long lonely nights in South Africa..

But let's get back to the game. So here is the squad sheet:
-----------Wiese
Fritz-Merte-Prödl-Boenisch

Barg - Frings - Boro

Marin - Austronautovic
Pizzaro

Naturally, Borowski was the common object of disconcertment on the pitch - this might be solved once Wesley gets his proper documents and joins the team. Borowski - well there were two secenes in the first half that stuck out in particular, showcasing his insecurieties (I am clueless as to where they stem from and would wish his old confidence would come back). Pretty early on, Bargfrede, in a very strong moment of his, out-witted Cologne's defense - him against THREE!- passes on to Pizarro in the thick of it - who pulled out his old "mit Hack" trick which usually was anticipated by either Mesut or Almeida... This time around, no one joined in, unfortunately. But the rebounce somehow got on the far right side - Fritz manages to reach that ball (he IS quick!) to pass it on Boro who plays an awful low cross, totally missing Pizarro and the others. Sigh. Shortly after a silly ball loss... It might be that he has to fill in whereever a whole appears in WB's defense. Usually when Frings reaches the ball, falls and manages only to play a short pass instead of keeping the ball and opening up the game...

In general, the axis between Marin-Austronaut (and Fritz/Bargfrede) looked incredibly promising - if they keep synchronizing their actions better (needs more triangular passes) or anticipating each others positions/Laufwege? better, it will be a win-win situation for both! And Werder.
For I do think Marin (apart from my slight mockery for his getting fouled frequently and Werder benefitting from that) again played a great game today - he sped up the game with his crafty dribblings on his side, at times even Fritz joined in and raised the pressure on Colognes crumbling and inexperienced defense. To be fair, they had to compensate two players, Geromel and I forgot the other one. And their b-team defense could clearly not live up to Werder's attacks. Having said this, it also relativates todays win. For Cologne, despite scoring twice, was not an adequate partner to proove Werder's eligibility as a top three team yet. (Currently we are seeded 8th) I said yet, because we are still not complete and I'm sure things are going to fall into place once TS gets his team ready. And we are still only in week two, remember - Hannover 96 is currently 5th (I think they have never before had such a good start, I am going to mark this in my calendar) - it is still too early for credible predictions since most teams are not even complete. So patience yourselves.

So on the plus side - Merte looked recovered - as did Prödl of sorts - unlike most self-declared critics trolling in various forums, I believe Prödl just needs more game practice on the a-team for he could make a decent back-up - but not (yet) a regular on the first team. I'm glad once Naldo comes back. *When?*
Merte had a good moment when Frings glued a corner shot on his head (25min), though he could not get any pressure on the ball. So we still keep waiting for Mertesacker's first goal. The rebounce from that shot createtd a nice chance for Austronautovic - he smacked the ball just a little too high over the crossbar. He was so loaded, you could tell! More so, Merte also won a couple challenges, most prominently against Podolski (17min), confronting him by running him out.

Around that time, that Fritz popped up in Colognes box here and there. Nice. Needs more of that. He played solid today and his unselfish assist for Austronaut undermines his good performance.

But lets not mess up the timeline - so Frings fulfilled his duty - but only shortly after (36min)Arnautovic nodded the ball with his head in from short range, after Pizarro's artistic backwards volley shot on him.

The inital cross came from Borowski's right side. Only a few minutes later, Podolski scored the reducer...I could not see who let Pezzoni gave that long cross from the midfield (that's were the mistake happened) right onto Poldi's head...(38min) Score - 2-1. I think it was Poldi's first goal in a really really looooooong time...
Pizarro got subbed for Almeida, muscle strain... O_o!

In the second half we saw more of that eternal battle between Marin and Pezzoni, Boenisch had a try at a distance shot. Boro, on the other hand, took too much time to finish his promising attack in the box to then evaporate into thin air...
Minute 68. saw his substitution for Hunt and things started to look slightly better. Hunt is still not fit yet.
Frings then had to pull someone's shirt to get carded. Only for the record... And his ego. He got spontaneous applause when he got a ball to prevent a throw-in. Oh my.

Min 73. - Almeida executed, experienced scorer he is, a nice long cross from Austronautovic coldbloodedly. Austro performed a beautiful little dance with two Cologne players only to leave them puzzled behind to play that killer cross. NICE!

The ususal muddled mess in our box - no order nowhere - a good moment for Poldi (80min)to take his left hammer out and put Wiese to the test. Wiese was up for it - he knew that one from weeks and weeks (and weeks) of state-of-the-art- goalie-training with Flick in South Africa, I'm sure ;)

When Marin got subbed for Jensen (83 min.) I noticed how the entire stadion got up and payed tribute to him! That was really moving! It should give him a boost!

Frings got highlighted when he cleared last minute on the line... Wiese bowed down.

Almeida had his 'Imaselfishbitch'-moment, missing, whilst Hunt next to him rubbed his eyes in disbelief...

So you would think 83 min, yawn, -- "der Drops ist gelutscht" - but, lookahere (!) , Austronaut was not having that. His batteries were still charged and ready and his guns loaded! And his guns, lemmetellu, are pretty mighty and impressive!!! So around comes minute 90 + 1 injury time (always a good Werder moment to score these days) and Austronaut profited from Fritz's unselfishness hammering in that "Torfabrik" ball. Ins lange Eck! Wummms! And the Ostkurve/ stands loved him instantly! Yay! He has arrived. KATS are able to handle him. Not out of control, like the yellow press wants us to believe.

As for McKenna's reducer... Aww. WTF. I don't even want to see who fucked it up in our box (EDIT : Prödl) For me, that game ended with Austronaut shooting us onto the moon, nah, even beyond... Whatever green-white spaceship he is on - I'm with him!!!

On a different note, I think Thomas Tuchel (Mainz 05) would, imho, make the only true successor (if there ever is one needed) to TS. They pulled a Werder today, against VfL Wolfsburg. They were 3-0 down(!) after the first half. Diego scored nicely and Mandzukic (rumoured to be a WB transfer at some point) and Dzeko harmonized beautifully - in the first half, that is! But then came Mainz. Fucked them real bad! (well, their defense sooooo craved to be fucked, tbh! Whatever happened to overhyped Kjaer, that pricey 10 Million transfer?) 3-FOUR in the end! Poor Diego ;) In general, I do like how Tuchel coaches his team - he goes for young talents, but most importantly, always makes the most tactically of his creatively rather limited team. Cudos!
