Medic on the Field

Apparently, he had now become the Winchesters’ personal physician.

Not that he minded, as he really did like the boys, but when the pay was crap and involved a lot of house calls, you start to wonder if people are really just taking advantage of your good nature and your willingness to help people. But then again, when the people you’re helping happen to find the most interesting ways to screw themselves up-physically speaking-it makes the whole not getting paid end of the shaft? A lot more fun.

He parked his motorcycle outside of the hotel and once he had called up to let Dean know he was there, he made his way into the lobby, glancing around as he went. The girl on the phone asked him to make sure that he had his possession protection charms on hand, considering that this was a big demon battle of some kind. So, naturally, he stocked up on pain relievers, anticonvulsants for Alec, a suture kit, and whatever other things he thought might be helpful. Loaded all in a book bag, he had taken off for the hotel with the directions that Anna had given him, and hopefully there wouldn’t be too much trouble for him.

He waited in the lobby for a minute, rocking slightly on his heels while he waited. This wasn’t a bad place as far as Winchester hangouts go. In fact, this could probably be considered down right fancy as far as they were concerned. It was nice not to be called to a seedy motel for once. He was turning around, looking at the various details that had gone into the room when he heard Dean’s voice coming from behind him.

“Kutner!” He turned quickly and gave Dean a small smile. Dean returned it with a smirk of his own, but there was something else too it-there wasn’t exactly the same effort in it. “Here I was hoping you’d send the hot doc to assist me.”

It was a good joke, but the way he delivered it was just tired-as though his heart wasn’t in it. Kutner didn’t acknowledge it though, just smirked. “Hadley doesn’t make house calls.” Dean nodded slowly, and Kutner’s eyes traveled to the shoulder he was favoring, wondering how bad the bullet wound was, and how good a job whoever had dressed it had done. He glanced around for a minute before nodding towards the elevator. “So should we head up?”

Dean paused for a minute, before shaking his head. “Alec, he’s uh-he’s having some light issues. I figured we could just find somewhere down here to work this out.” Kutner nodded before following Dean’s lead to a room a bit farther back from the lobby. At this time of night, the dining room was closed, so they would have plenty of privacy. Dean easily flipped a chair off the table with his good arm, placing it down on the floor before sitting on it and starting to remove his shirt. “I think Anna cleaned it up pretty well. I just want to make sure it shouldn’t be too infected or anything.”

Kutner could see in Dean’s face that he was tired. He’d been through a lot in the past few months, at least that the doctor was aware of, and it didn’t seem to be letting up. If Kutner had been more of a friend, he would have pressed him about it, but at the moment, he just looked him over and made sure everything was good to go.

“I could probably suture this for you,” Kutner said with a sigh, but you’re also just fine leaving it as is. Up to you.”

Dean thought this over for a minute, before shaking his head. “I’m good. Really. I’ve had worse.”

Kutner nodded before starting to put some of his stuff away. “Want me to come up and have a look at Alec?”

Dean nodded eagerly, before sliding his shirt back over his shoulder. “I don’t know if you’ll be able to do anything, but I think you might at least be able to help with the seizures or something. He’s-he’s having a really rough time.”

“I’ll see what I can do,” Kutner said with a slow nod, before starting to follow Dean again. He liked the Winchesters, he really did, and the occult world interested him for more reasons than he could possibly explain, but he wouldn’t wish the Winchester life on anyone. He really, really wouldn’t.
