Kutner had thought she was going to kill him.
If she had still been a demon, she might of. That would have been a quick, instinctive, angry reaction, but really -- she wasn't sure at all how she felt about this. She hadn't wanted a kid. She and Sam had talked about it, and she knew that he wanted this, but she wasn't so sure that she did. She never felt particularly maternal, even as a human, and now she was a certified mess. Sam would be a good dad. Her ability to be a mother? Suspect at best.
But there was no going back on this now. It had happened, whether because they were stupid or on purpose, didn't matter. It was happening and they just had to deal with it. She made her way home the long way, walking so that she could try and see if she had a better handle on the news by the time she got there, but as she came up the front steps, she still wasn't feeling any better. Then again, she was sure she had nine months, more or less, to actually get used to it, so they would just have to see.
She found him in the living room, climbing over him so that she was straddling his waist and resting her head against his chest. "I'm starting to think that you're all conspiring against me."
Well, Sam had been working on his laptop when Ruby came home, and he was going to get up to greet her but instead found his wife in his lap. He wasn't going to complain, but he could see that she was upset about something. When she was upset, he worried. "Well, the last time I conspired against you involved things you were very pleased about, so I don't know what this could be about..." he said, clearly confused. "Something wrong?"
She was quiet for a moment, before lifting her head to look at him and deciding not to beat around the bush. "I'm pregnant."
Sam just stared at her. Blinking. Did she just... "You're...?"
She just nodded, before sliding her arms around his neck a bit. "Yeah. Kutner thinks about a month or so along."
He was still a bit speechless, his eyes showing that he was processing it all and then he looked at her, worried. "Are you ok with this?" he asked, biting on his lip a bit.
"Don't know yet," she said softly. "Still kind of working it over." A beat. "How about you?" Because if he was happy about this, she wasn't about to take it away from him.
"I don't know. I... I was trying to get myself used to the idea this wasn't going to be an option..." He looked her in the eyes. "You're really pregnant? This isn't some joke...?"
"No joke," she sighed, shaking her head slightly. "If you want, you can go talk to Kutner and see the blood test to prove it."
Sam licked his lips and his arms pulled her a little closer. He then leaned forward to kiss her a moment before looking in her eyes, his lips inches away from hers. "Can we keep it?" he asked, almost like he was asking if they could keep a stray puppy. Because he knew there was nothing he could do if Ruby wanted to end the pregnancy. But she didn't have to tell him about it if she was going to do that. His eyes filled with hope at that realization that maybe... just maybe she was going to do this for him.
Ruby's eyes came up at that question, possibly a little offended, though she knew why he had asked. "You really have to ask me that?" She looked down a bit, her eyes focusing on her fingers against his shirt. "I know I wasn't really the biggest fan of all this, but I'm not gonna take that out on some innocent kid because I got sloppy, and I wouldn't do that to you."
Sam brought his hands up to cup both her cheeks, lifting her head to look at him. "You are going to be a great mother, Ruby. I know you're scared, and I am too. But we can do this." The smile was coming to his face now. "Together we can do anything."
She watched the smile on his face and she nodded. "Just -- don't get mad at me if I'm not ecstatic right off the bat."
"I won't. Just don't freak out when I act completely dorky and get overprotective of you."
She sighed heavily and rolled her eyes a bit. "You're the only one. Anyone else is getting kicked in the nads."
His face broke out into a bright grin and he pulled her in for another kiss. "I love you. So much." He told her, then kissed her again, his excitement starting to really come out as he hugged her tightly.
She leaned into the kiss, just soaking all of it in and trying to let it calm some of her nerves. It didn't help as much as she would have liked, but it did help some, so she would at least be thankful for that. She just took a breath and move her body closer, relaxing against him. "I hope I do this right."
"It will come to you. I've seen you stare death in the face and laugh. This will be easy and it'll just come to you." He leaned back, holding her close to his chest. "And there are books and I'm sure there are new mommy groups you could join and make a few friends at."
"Yeah. Me hanging out with the other moms to be. That'll go over real well."
"It's just an idea," he said innocently. "I'll get books."
She nodded slowly. "I just -- don't want to screw him or her up." She was quiet again for a moment. "And the only reason why you're getting overprotective rights is because you're probably going to get the brunt of my hormones driving me crazy."
"I've been getting that for almost two decades... this will just be a change of pace," he pointed out, running a hand through her hair. "You won't screw our child up, Ruby. Just have faith in yourself."
"Sam -- you haven't been in my head lately." She curled into him for a moment, resting her head against his shoulder again. "It's not a nice place."
"And I've spent nearly twenty years leading a demon army and living a life of violence and blood revenge," he pointed out. "One which I'm still responsible for, even through a proxy. We both have our issues. But a baby is going to love you unconditionally. You took care of me, and I know you'll protect our baby with your life. It will come together, I promise. Just don't freak yourself out right now."
"I'm trying," she sighed. "Not quite there yet."
"You have nine months to stretch your worry out. Don't do it all at once," he commented, then hugged her close. "I'm gonna be a daddy," he said softly, like it was the best thing in the world. It was the same love he had asked her to marry him with. The love of his dreams finally coming true after so long.
"Yeah," she said softly. "Yeah, you are."
He couldn't help it. He was very excited. Trying very hard to be supportive but he was very excited at this new twist that their future had and he bounced just a bit.
She chuckled slightly. "Let it out, Sam. Keeping it in isn't going to do you any good."
He smiled, then literally stood up. Still holding her and he laughed and twirled her around the room like he had wanted to do the second she had told him the news. Then he pulled her close and kissed the hell out of her, all the excited energy behind the kiss.
She grinned as she leaned into the kiss, wrapping her arms around his neck as she moved closer. "I just wanna make you happy. You know that, right?"
"You already make me happy," he pointed out to her. "So yes, I know. And you know I'm always going to be here for you, no matter what. Right?"
"Yeah," she nodded. "Yeah, I do."
"That's all we need, Ruby. Everything else will just fall into place. I promise you that." He kissed her again.
She leaned into the kiss and nodded. "Good. I hope so."
"It will." He hugged her close. "I need to tell Dean..." he said softly, wanting to share the news with his brother. That was what brothers were for, after all.
"Go, go," she sighed, shaking her head, before making a face. "I think my lunch might be disagreeing with him or her anyway."
"It was the spinning, wasn't it?" Cue instant overprotective Sam. "Do you need something to drink? Here, lay down..."
"Too soon," she sighed, pushing him away. "Go talk to your brother."
"Ok, ok..." he held up his hands. "I'll be out on the back porch. If you need me, just shout." With that, he went to make his way outside, grabbing two beers from the fridge as he went before sitting down in the swing. Putting them on the railing, he closed his eyes.
Dean... when you have a minute, I need to tell you something.
And then he just sat back to wait, knowing that it could take some time if his brother was in the middle of something.
It was a few minutes later before Dean appeared, leaning back on the railing as he reached for one of the beers on instinct. "Is everything alright?"
Sam jumped just a bit. He was never going to get used to it, even when he was expecting it. He looked over at his brother and smiled, giddy. "Everything is perfect. I just needed to share the news with you."
He raised an eyebrow, indicating that Sam should continue. He didn't sip the beer at first, just sort of held it in his hand as though he was trying to figure out what he was supposed to do with it. It wasn't that he didn't know what it was -- he just never was sure what he should do with food. Beyond pie, anyway. Pie was an automatic reaction.
Sam took a sip of his own, then stood up. "I'm gonna be a dad," he said simply, holding out his arms. His smile took years off his face, and every time he said it he just felt younger and happier.
Dean was suddenly glad that he hadn't taken a sip of the beer because he probably would have choked on it. Not in a bad way, it was just that those weren't the words he was expecting to hear. He blinked at his brother for a moment, a bit of a smile crossing his face. "Seriously?"
"Yeah, seriously. She said Kutner confirmed it." He was practically bouncing on his heels. "Which means you're going to be an uncle."
Dean's smile widened a little more. "That's fantastic, Sammy."
Sam went over and hugged his brother quickly before pulling away. "And I know you're busy with Alec and all your other responsibilities, but this is Ruby who's going to be pregnant. When she really starts getting crazy, I might need some angelic rescuing, if you know what I mean."
Dean laughed. "I think you'll be fine. And if you do get hurt, I don't think you wouldn't have done anything to earn it."
"Oh thanks. I thought you're supposed to be on my side here." Sam leaned on the railing next to his brother, teasing him a bit.
"Oh, I am. But -- she's the one having the baby."
"And I'm going to take good care of both of them." Sam chuckled and looked at his beer bottle. "She asked me once if I wanted a boy or a girl. I told her I'd be happy with either. I didn't think I'd actually get the chance." He smiled. "It's like this Christmas present I'm not going to get to open but just get to stare at for months."
"Don't stare too much. That might earn you some of that bodily harm you mentioned earlier."
Sam chuckled a bit because he could say something about how he liked to stare at Ruby long before she was his wife, let alone pregnant. "Guess we'll see how much she really minds that. I wonder if they have a book on how to survive pre-fatherhood."
