Ben was still getting used to the real world, even though it was over a week now since he escaped from the djinn's world. He was getting better at it, but sometimes he still slipped and realized it and withdrew from the rest of the room until someone pulled him back. Every day was better, but he knew it was going to happen, and when it did he hated himself.
He felt the people around him were starting to get angry. Why couldn't he put that world behind him? It was a dream, and nothing more. The people there didn't exist, and the sooner he got that straight, the better everyone else would be.
But only his father understood that it wasn't that easy. He wished it was, he really did, but Ben would admit he missed the feeling of happiness that filled that world. It just seemed colder here. Darker. And he wished that he could take everyone as they are now and put them into the happier world so they could all feel that warmth. Then maybe they would understand.
After leaving New Jersey, they had made a quick stop at Bobby's. Then Sam and Ruby headed off to Seattle to start the arrangements for the wedding while Ben and Anna went to Mama's so Ben could relax just a bit more. It was one of the few places that Ben was welcome in with open arms, and he just hugged Mama tightly when he got there. He knew that just some of her soul food and warm words would be exactly what he needed.
That and some intimate time with Anna to get themselves back on the same page. Because he couldn't lose her to this. He loved her too much to ever lose her. And as they went upstairs to bed, he held onto her hand tightly, then caught her eye and smiled.
"You know, we might as well just put our names on the door with how often we're here."
