PSA and travel tips

It's never too early to make your Thanksgiving travel reservations, especially if you're traveling by train; and the longer you wait the fewer your options and the pricier they may get. Book now!

If you're traveling on Amtrak in coach and picking your ticket up at the station, as long as your ticket isn't yet printed you can cancel online or over the phone with zero penalty (full refund) all the way up until one day before your travel date. You can also always get the full value of your reservation applied towards future travel (within a year), if you miss the cancellation window (or even miss your train altogether).

Not sure if you want to return on Saturday or Sunday after Thanksgiving? Book both now and decide on that Friday which to take and which to cancel.

Book each leg as a one-way trip: there's no extra cost over booking round-trip, and it increases your flexibility (since you can't cancel half of a round-trip reservation without canceling the whole thing and re-booking the part you still want).
