What We Learned

Dec 27, 2014 16:55

Someone has written a Crosby/Malkin story set during the Finnish Winter War. Like, I'm intrigued, sure, but also apprehensive. Also, I don't know if you've notice this, but neither of them are Finnish. Crosby must be a Canadian volunteer (I think there were some? There were British ones, at least.) I haven't read it, I'm happy to just speculate in advance. Did they meet in a trench? Did they meet in a POW camp? I can find out easily, but I don't know if I want to. It was a shitty war, like most wars.

The Hockey World Junior Championship is underway. Did you know that Canadians go nuts over a bunch of spotty teenagers playing a game? I have been told they do. I'm watching for the hair. A lot of these kids are really dedicated to their mullets.

Also for the names: there's a Slovakian [ETA: I tell a lie, he's Czech] kid named Masin, pronounced 'machine', which is awesome. Can't wait til he makes the NHL (he's a TBL 2nd rounder) and gets a hockey nickname. Canadian announcers battling their way through multisyllabic Finnish names such a Kalapudas and Puljujärvi and Lyytinen. There are two guys named Sebastian Aho and they're on different teams.

The less said about Christmas the better. I've been feeling pretty aggressively meh for the last week, thus wasting this precious free time, giving myself angst because I'm wasting it, worrying about work starting again, etc etc. Not constructive. Unlike knitting, which is very constructive. Knit your worries away!

ficspelunking, hockey, therapy?
