Failure
Glumly, Neville twisted his wand in his hands as he sat on a bench outside the Room of Requirement. It had been weeks since Harry had started teaching them all defenses, he had yet to perform the most basic spell correctly, let alone prove himself to be the wizard who could be a hero and avenge his parents. It was a wretched day. As he heard footsteps down the hall, he lifted his head, wondering if his day were about to get even worse.
Instead, it was only Cho coming down the hall. She looked down the hall over her shoulder, making sure she wasn’t being followed. As she walked toward him, Neville noticed that she looked happy, much happier than he had seen her since... well, for a long time.
When she saw him sitting there all forlorn, she stopped and her smile fell from her sweet face. “Neville, what’s wrong?” she asked softly, peering into his face as she sat beside him.
Neville considered giving the obligatory “nothing,” but seeing the earnestness in her face, decided to tell her the truth. He mumbled, “I keep failing at the spells. I’m never going to learn to do anything. No matter how hard I try, how much I practice, I can’t do anything right.”
Cho put her hand on his shoulder and said firmly, “that’s nonsense, Neville. You’ll get it soon, I just know you will. We’re all at the same place, trying to learn these difficult spells. It’s hard for evyerone. You’re no failure.”
Neville smiled. Something about Cho always made him feel better about himself. Maybe a kind word was all he needed. As he stood up, he said with a smile, “maybe I haven’t failed after all, maybe I’ve just found 10,000 ways that don’t work.”
Cho laughed as they walked into the room.
