I stopped to sniff the air for the scent of my prey before continuing on my way. I kept close to the edge of the granite rock face that rose above me. The shadows hid my lean form well; my golden eyes gleaming in the fading sunlight were the only part of me readily visible. Secrecy wasn't really necessary; that which I hunted had no chance whether they saw me or not - staying hidden was just the pumas' way.
I had left for South America three days earlier and found my Animagus form much more useful for traversing the rugged Andes Mountains. In fact, I had not returned to my human form in over a day and a half. Instead of being difficult as I thought it would be, my cat form was easy to maintain. Perhaps it was the crisp mountain air that kept my strength up.
Silently, I scaled a large boulder and peered down the other side. There they were. The Order had sent me bring back a young couple who were suspected Death Eater sympathizers. Dead or alive. Unfortunately for them, a puma was better at the former.
They hadn't seen me yet. And most likely, wouldn't, until it was too late. As I hunched my shoulders, preparing to spring, a high voice caught my attention. I sank to my belly as a young girl about five-years-old with pink-bowed pigtails and everything ran to her mother who swung her up in her arms.
No one had mentioned a child. The black tip of my tail twitched, the only sign of my annoyance. Death Eaters or not, anyone this far removed from civilization could do little harm. Perhaps it would be best... Then with the perception only a child has, the little girl turned and spotted me.
Her joyful cry of "¡el gato!" alerted her parents, but I was already gone, hidden in the shadows of the Andes and on my way home.
