Trip to Atlanta, GA

Dec 21, 2008 17:50

Since work had announced that all non-essential personell at DOW must leave for the last two weeks of the year (without pay), and I had already purchased my overpriced plane tickets for Dec 24th, I thought this would be a great time to take one of Nick's infamous spontaneous vacations.

The target for this spontaneous vacation was Atlanta, GA. This city is HUGE! Subway stations, a downtown district that extends for miles, airport, 30-mile radius of suburbs, two equally major freeways, and its very own Jewish Deli! If I were a city man, and I didn't have enough money to live in New York, Atlanta would be my next city-of-choice.

Today I did the tourism bit, and I'm about to run out to a comedy show in about 20 minutes. Downtown Atlanta can be a fun place, and I'm curious to see the area when Monday comes around. I took a tour of the US CNN headquarters. I realize the anchorman position is not so great because the anchorman that I see on the news everyday had to work that Sunday. Downtown also has the Olympic Park (1996) and the Coca-Cola factory. Olympic Park was established because the 1996 Olympic games ceremony was held in Atlanta, GA.

Coca-cola was apparently first marketed in Atlanta in the late 1800's. The inventor sold the Coca-cola recipe to an entrepreneur, and the entrepreneur basically made the company. Coca-cola admits that the only reason it stands today is because of good marketing, and the original product didn't taste that bad either. The Coca-Cola factory was a fun place to see the collected Coca-cola product memorallia. Remember the Santa posters and Coca-cola polar bear? They also had a few Harry Potter Coca-cola glass bottles and tons of stamps. Strange things like that. The best part of the tour is the tasting center, where they give samples of 72 currently marketed Coca-cola products all around the globe. One of them (it's sold in Africa) is the sweetest thing I've ever tasted, and the other (it's in South America) is among the worst thing I've ever tasted. Anyway, I had a good time, so if you ever drop by Atlanta, you should go to the New World of Coca-Cola. It's just a subway ride away from the airport.

It's times like these that I wish my camera didn't eat all my batteries...
