Scene 7
'Inu-Yuna... So that's her name.' It was unfortunate for Tsukiya that he choose that moment to glance at the captive.

"Give it to me!" The youkai struck, its seven remaining human arms grasping for Tsukiya's body and clothes as it barreled into him. Its momentum slammed its human prize into the trunk of the Sacred Tree.

His breath lost to the impact, Tsukiya could only watch as the youkai looked him up and down, searching... Its grip tightened as if in preparation of tearing him apart, and Tsukiya hissed in pain. 'No... Get away from me...'  Involentarily, his hands raised, as if to physically push the youkai away. 'Away... AWAY!'

Time ground to a halt, as something pulsed inside Tsukiya. He recognized it as the same feeling that protected him in the well, and felt it react to his frantic plea. For a moment the world went white around Tsukiya. A harsh cry pierced the air, and when the world returned the yokai was reeling away.

To Kaede's eyes, light coalesced between boy and youkai. The centipede had no time to wonder as its arms were forced away, the light repulsing the youkai with great force.

Tsukiya was stricken speechless by the seeming impossibility of his own actions... So Inu-Yuna filled in. "A seirei kekkai? Without a focus? Heh... Maybe ya ain't so helpless afta all."

As surprise melted away, Tsukiya's focus returned. He pushed himself upright off the Goushinboku and grit his teeth. "Holy it might be, but a barrier won't bring victory, only reprieve--!"

Tsukiya was right. In moments the youkai had regained itself and charged again, howling. The boy's jaw clenched, and he raised his hands once more.

The impact was stunning, the centipede's aura of malice against Tsukiya's grim determination. For a heartbeat force met object and the two balanced. Then the moment shattered; Tsukiya felt his throat close as a terrible emptiness tore a hole deep inside him. The feeling radiated outward, numbing every part of his body it enveloped--

Pain exploded from the left side of Tsukiya's body, starting just under his rib cage. Looking down in mounting horror, Tsukiya saw the youkai's fangs buried in his flesh. Then it pulled. Hard.

Blood flew. So did something small and round.

Tsukiya fell back against Inu-Yuna's bound form, not quite comprehending what it meant for red warmth to be spilling down his left hip and leg.

"Shikon no Tama!" The centipede lunged for it.

Inu-Yuna's eyes went wide. "Shikon-!? Fucking centipede, that's mine!"

The centipede youkai curled around the Jewel, looking up at the other two over the Jewel's gleaming surface. "I have heard of the one in red robes who once coveted the Shikon no Tama, only to start living alongside the miko who guards it... A hanyou," it spat the word like a vile curse. "But what can the little hanyou do under such a powerful spell?"

Inu-Yuna thrashed against her bonds, snarling through the other youkai's mocking laughter. Coils of insectile body dropped from above and snapped taut, pinning Tsukiya to the Goushinboku beside the furious hanyou.

Tsukiya's vision grew hazy, but each time he felt faint, the white-haired girl... the 'hanyou'... would thrash or growl. The shift of her legs, level with his back, threw the world back into focus for a moment, and Tsukiya realized that she was growling at him with those rough words and that silky voice.

"Damnit, human! Do you want to die?!"

The words slowly coalesced in Tsukiya's mind. 'Die...? No... I don't want to... I don't want to die!'

Over the boy's head where he couldn't see it, Inu-Yuna smirked at the murmured reply. "This arrow... pull it out!"

The concept of death twisted in Tsukiya's heart like a knife, and through the fear he fought his way back to full consciousness. 'Arrow...!' Tilting his head back, he spotted the wooden shaft protruding from the girl's shoulder. Gritting his teeth, Tsukiya twisted his body under the youkai's restraining coil until his left arm was free. He strained to reach the arrow above him, and finally grasped it.

He pulled, but in such a position leverage was poor. On top of that, another voice started clamoring in the background, telling him not to remove the arrow.

Doubts began to whisper, only to be swept away as that compelling voice hissed, "Hurry up! If that insect gets done absorbing the Shikon no Tama, it'll kill us all!"

Tsukiya's grip tightened on the arrow. 'Kill us... Kill us... No damnit, I want to live!' The shaft did not move. 'I want us to live!' Not even a centimeter. 'I want you to live--'
The arrow-
'--Inu-Yuna!'
-vanished, as if it never existed.
