AND IT WAS AWESOME.
Seriously - I know people were all marginally freaked out because David Tennant was leaving (and we loves him), and Matt Smith was weird-looking (he is a bit - admit it), and everything was changing... but that's what makes this show so good!
Having been an old-school Who fan, I was leaning towards being open-minded about Matt Smith (Tennant was good - but no one will ever supplant Tom Baker), and I am so glad because he was charming. Really, truly charming.
Frankly, though, how can you not love a man who
prepared for the role by writing fanfiction?
I generally love post-regeneration episodes for the whackiness anyway, but I really, really liked the way Smith seemed to be channelling Tennant's manic energy, without making it too much of an impersonation of David Tennant. And there were some fantastic lines thrown in there too ("beans are evil!" being among my favourites -- as I wholeheartedly agree). I love the "mad man in a box" persona they've got going - and I hope, in time, he'll even out into his own, equally mad, but distinct from Tennant-y grove.
As for Amy Pond - I was very, very annoyed, to be totally honest, that we had yet another human companion. (WE CAN HAS ALIENS PLZ? Or at the very least, a human from a different time frame... Remember how awesome Zoë was? And Jamie? And in regards to alien companions: Nyssa? And Romana? QED.) The human companion thing is becoming somewhat redundant, imho. That said, I like her. She's not quite what I expected
(GAHAAHA THE WHOLE KISS-O-GRAM AND THE "I'M THE DOCTOR, I'M WORSE THAN EVERYBODY'S AUNT" WAS HILARIOUS), and I love, love, love the way she was introduced into the story.
On that note
I'm so, so very glad they've stopped with the companion angsting. Ten's OMG-I-LOST-ROSE-AND-MARTHA-AND-DONNA-AND-CAN-THEREFORE-NEVER-HAVE-A-COMPANION-AGAIN wangst was starting to drive me a little insane. I'm glad the new Doctor jumped in with both feet and brought her aboard without having to sit and ponder angstily about it.
What I think made me happiest about this episode was the way it felt like the show was getting new life -- which is why I think the re-casting of the Doctor and the whole regeneration concept is one of the best ideas this show has ever come up with.
I'm so happy that Steven Moffat is doing a lot of the writing for this, as, once again, this episode was spot on. I hope the show will continue in this vein going forward, because so far, it's fantastic.
ALSO, I LOVE HIS BOWTIE.
How can you not love the bowtie?
