"Sending misfortune to the wind
Lanterns are released during the religious celebration of Yee Peng, or "full moon," in Chiang Mai province, Thailand, on Sunday. The highlight of the festival is the release of the Khom loy, or "floating lanterns," with the belief that misfortune will be carried off with the lanterns. The event is so popular that air traffic has been warned to exercise caution, as the climbing lanterns could pose a danger to the engines."
