Oh, I was so glad to hear his voice. At around 1:45 this afternoon, I got a call from
somnialcat telling me he'd landed safely, in Boston. I got home from work and an afternoon chiro appt, and he was just finishing a bath. A bit sun baked, and scratched up from all his hiking around, but back, and much better for his travels. He instantly started upturning his pack to show me of all the treasures he brought back. At Heathrow Airport, he remembered my insane fondness for Jelly Babies, and bought me two bags! A Kinderegg! With a tiny toy helicopter inside of it. Special Kenyan ginger beer. Wow. Strong stuff. A whole mess of African honey for Ro and I to brew with. Cool. And then he let me unwrap all of the other gifts he's brought back for friends and loved ones. Including my birthday gifts! Masi beaded bracelets.
Earrings of carved wood, horn, and spiraled wire. A soapstone box carved and painted with a design of zebras. An amazing horn and shell beaded belt. An amazingly thorny looking necklace of horn and bone. So generous! I was truly overwhelmed.
I told him again and again as I hugged him that having him be home and safe was the best present of all and that I was just glad the lions hadn't eaten him. Shortly before he left,
somnialcat has told me that he'd had to take out an additional life insurance policy, because some of the safari tours he was going on insisted on this. That specifically if he got mauled or killed by a lion, I would get a lot of money. Uh, while it's oddly romantic that he'd name me as the beneficiary, I did not want him to get hurt or killed by lions. I imagined that if this happened I'd be haunted by lions forever after.
"Lions ate my boyfriend!", I'd howl in sorrow, anytime I had to see any representation of a lion.
While apparently he got to see a lot of really cool critters, and fairly up close, he was careful not to get close enough to be lunch or dinner for any of them.
All in all we spent a couple of hours just chatting and delighting in one another's presence. So many hugs and kisses. Home. Safe. So glad. Then because I'm still not 100% all better from being worn out due to being poisoned, and because his jet lag was starting to make him see vapors, we had to part. It's been so long since we've had time for one another. Between our schedules and life shit, it's been really hard to be with one another, even before he left for Kenya. It's so nice that we'll have the means to make more time for catching up over the next few days.
