what's in a name?

"Every word of God proves true; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him." ~Proverbs 30:5

i was just sitting here thinking about how strong words are. we grew up hearing that sticks and stones may break our bones, but words will never hurt us. but i'm not quite sure if that makes much sense. not from what i can see at least. i mean, on some level i can work it where i see "don't let people's opinions of you get to you." and yes, that is a good lesson to learn and i've had to learn that the hard way more than once. but i was thinking more along the lines of the power in words themselves. i grew up knowing that the Lord created this world and never once did i picture the Lord with a hammer and nails in hand. my Bible says He spoke this world into existence. that's a lot of power! granted my words have little power compared to the Lord's...i've never spoken a car or a tree or my mate into existence, however cool that would be. but nonetheless, they do have power. throughout the Word, God was in the business of changing people's names. abraham, joshua, jacob, paul. the name of the child is one of the most important facets of a jewish kid's life to this day. hmm, i wonder why? my thought is when we call someone, we are calling it in someone. over someone. praise the Lord my name doesn't mean water buffalo or village idiot or something. what's more, what do we call the Lord? do we call Him truth or good or liar or bad? what do we call Him with our actions? what do we call Him with our lives? what do we call ourselves? others? and moreover, who does He call us? MY BELOVED, MY FRIEND, MORE THAN CONQUERORS, MY DELIGHT, MY BRIDE...and the list goes on and on and on. but a bit of peace: "the accuser of our brothers has been hurled down, who accuses them day and night before our God. and they conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony..." (Revelation 12:10-11). this calls the enemy out for who he is...our accuser. but more importantly, we combat those accusations by Jesus' blood and with the Truth. the Truth about who the Lord is and the Truth about who the Lord calls us. may we KNOW that every word of the Lord proves TRUE...and that's my shield...
