The more I see of vids, the more I think I need to bone up on 50's movies. I liked everything I saw on the videos above, so I guess I'll start with those and then branch out.

Thanks for more movies to add- I think I might make a new little post about the movies members want to add to the 50's. That could be fun too.

Maybe out next movie poll should be a 50's one. :)

Thanks for the additonal movies to add. I think I am going to make a "members choices for the 50's" post to show what you guys think. :)

I can totally see where you are coming from- I agree that a couple of good films a year dosen't make a good industry.

As for the sad lives of the actresses- yeah! I was amazed that so many of them died young with very sad tales, while the actors (mostly) are still alive today. Hmm...

I have definitely not seen enough of these. Right now I'm fangirling about Dilip Kumar like crazy :) I love both his entertainers like Kohinoor, Aan (I own a copy of Subhash's book as well, and it did say what you wrote here, but some other sources say it wasn't a flop but a hit, so I'm confused...) and Azaad but also his more serious films like Madhumati and Devdas. So basically my plan is to see everything of his and it's going fairly well. I also like Raj Kapoor (especially in Awara and Shree 420) and Dev Anand (especially in CID). And Guru Dutt of course. A very interesting actor that's forgotten quite often is Balraj Sahni (see for example Do Bigha Zameen and Kathputli ( ... )

I was confused about a couple of things in the book as well...but I figure it is the book I own, so I'll go with it...but maybe I should make a comment like "take everything with a grain of salt- this is only one person's view on Bollywood" or something like that.

I too have a bit of a problem with Madhubala, but I am starting to like her. :)

I haven't seen most of these movies but I grew up listening to these songs and watching the "music videos". My parents loved to listen to these songs, because they reminded them of their childhood and young adulthood. I used to think some of these songs were sooo boring, when I was a kid, because they didn't have any of the "flash" of the '70s and 80s Hindi film music. It's only as an adult that I've come to appreciate them for the high point of the film industry...so much better than most of the trash that comes out of Mumbai film studios today. I've just started going back and revisiting the 60s, 70s and 80s films I grew up with, maybe I should add 50s movies to the list too.

Also, just wanted to add that I *love* Raj Kapoor. I remember watching Rishi Kapoor as a kid and wondering why he wasn't anything like his father. I think Ranbir's got a little bit of it, but no one can compare to the original.

I too feel that I need to add 50s movies to my "must watch" list. I can see where you would feel that the songs were boring when you were young. They are not so snazzy sounding as we are use to today- but I agree that the more you listen to them, the more you start to love them. I loved watching the dance movements form the 50's, they were much softer and lighter (if that makes any sense) than what I am use to now.

That is really helpful. It provided me a number of ideas and I'll be placing them on my web site eventually. I'm bookmarking your blog and I'll be back. Thanks again!
