Rec List, February 18-23

My favorites of what I've read in the past week, plus clearing out the last of the older links I haven't shared.

Contains three or so fics relating to 3.11, though I didn't post summaries or speak specifically about the stories to avoid spoiling anyone who has yet to see the episode.

Despite having been involved in fandoms for several years, I still stumble upon terms I’ve never seen before. These are really good sources for finally finding out what those nagging abbreviations and terms mean.

Spn Gen
Burning up the Quarter Mile by musesfool (PG)
Riding in the car with Dean behind the wheel feels as safe as lying in bed with a gun under his pillow and a salt circle poured on the carpet. Vague spoilers through 3.11.
- Deals delicately with the looming reality of Dean’s deal and his presence currently through the little moments in life, as well as the changes Sam and difficulties is going through as a result of it all.

Down Don’t Bother Me Again by ignipes (PG-13)
For once in his life, Sam isn't exactly in a sharing, caring mood. (Coda for BUABS)
- This is probably one of the most tagged and coda-ed episodes in the fandom, but this one shot still manages to set itself apart with the rawness of emotion and, as always from this writer, smoothly flowing and well-written words. Addresses both sides of the aftermath in an unforced way.

Hold Me Like a Newborn by oxoniensis (PG)
While reading through his father’s journal, Sam discovers some good, slightly touching, blackmail material for Dean.
- Short but sweet. Really, really sweet.

Hot as Hell (And It’s All Gonna Leave) by muddledmusings (PG-13)
Dean finds that inevitable envelope, and suddenly two plus two makes five.
- I’m one of those people with a soft spot for Stanford fic and this is a really nice take I read a long time ago on Dean finding out and the result.

The Last Boy Scout by H.T. Marie
John always knew Dean would end up being sacrificed for the cause.
- A roller coaster of emotions that had me shifting from, “Hey, this is good,” to “I don’t like this anymore,” based purely on the hell she put the boys through. Nonetheless, it ends on the fairly good side of the coin, overshadowing the bad that leads it there.

Looking for What You Knew by brynnmck (PG-13)
Sam's not a hundred percent sure what the protocol is when Dean is crying, but he's pretty sure it means he doesn't get to cry, so he just sits there, feels the warmth of the engine and the sun on his shoulders like blasphemy while Dean stares off into the distance.
- One of my favorite episodes is CSPWDT and this is an absolutely gorgeous take on that final scene and beyond.

Occasions of Sin by hiyacynth
"Oh, Sammy..." Pastor Jim sighs and runs his hand over his softly grooved face and up through his grayed hair. "Have you learned so little about forgiveness?"
- One of those fics that you read and go, “This must have taken forever to write,” because as I write I can gauge how meticulous it was to create. It jumps around a lot, Sam in different times consulting Pastor Jim, but in a way that works beautifully . I’m sure it required the type of patience I always wish I had, and it definitely pays off in this one shot.

Rockabye by thebitchtrolls (PG)
Sam isn’t used to Dean’s new no-touching, tough guy policy and proceeds to talk to him while he’s asleep and induces some bed-cuddling.
- Super, supercute.

Shadows Taller than Our Soul by legoline (R for angst)
After a mysterious accident, Sam finds himself in a world where the Winchesters never started to hunt - and Dean is a broken stranger.
- Nineteen chapters, but I read it all in one sitting it’s a fairly quick read. It grabs your heart and twists, following Sam specifically but giving you a glance of this different Dean lost his Sammy long ago and never quite recovered.

Sam/Dean
Angel by bitchandjerk (R)
Sam always has nightmares but he doesn't get concerned until they stop.
- Ridiculously adorable.

Mikey ‘Verse by bitchandjerk (Adult)
Sam disappears after a fight and Dean finds him ten month's later in a hospital. Dean has to work to put their relationship back together while dealing with a major change in their lives.
- I’m so late to the party on this one. It’s really long, but it’s good enough to catch up on. I’m not there yet, not by a long shot, but it’s a reading project of mine, like a novel. If you haven’t already, I’d suggest at least reading the first chapter to see if it sinks its adorable little claws into you, because I’m guessing it will.

North of Wednesday by merryish (R)
Post-3.11, so major spoilers if you haven’t seen it yet. Extremely vague mention of 3.10 as well.
- Beautiful first time fic that deals with the issues at hand, while exploring their meaning a bit further in terms of what it means for their relationship as brothers.

Swear by All the Flowers by sweetestdrain (Adult)
Two years after the yellow-eyed demon is defeated, the Winchesters are still waiting for their happy ending.
Pretty six-parter. Dean returns after two years with some heartbreaking news for Sam. Deals with the brotherly love as well as the changes in their relationship leading to a first time.

Tuesday’s Gone by dontwaitup (R)
Coda to 3.11, so major spoilers if you haven’t seen it.
- One of my favorite companion pieces to my new favorite episode. Extremely well executed with so many great moments and a wonderfully paced lead-up.

Belyste’s Fiction
Tag to all belyste’s fiction. She has about six posts, if I can count, both slash and gen, all of which are definitely worth reading.

Conquest’s Fiction
This is a tag to all the Supernatural fics of conquest. While her stories are harder than what I read, it’s easy to scroll through the NC-17 to find the original, well-crafted stories that I can sink right into. Good writer.
