We are the rock band No Respect For Beauty.

Q: There seem a lot of people who come in contact with post rock for the first time.
Han Shin: There are a lot of people who think difficult of us when we say that we are a rock band that does music without lyrics. Actually, in every-day’s life there is a lot of music in the background of movies or CFs without lyrics, right? Think of it like such music. But it seems because usually all bands have a vocal and we don’t, they think we’re special.
Jun Seok: It can be that we have a new feeling to the people who mainly listen to the popular exposed music, but those bands have been there a lot since the past and currently there are a lot bands active, I don’t think we’re special.
Woo Young: Actually, it’s not a difficult kind of music, they’re just not used to it.
HS: Because they’re songs in form of instrumentals, I think, especially with the feelings of the people who hear them, they put a huge meaning into them.
Q: Please talk about your name No Respect For Beauty.
WY: We were worrying about our band name and then Jun Seok came and suggested how No Respect For Beauty would be and we settled for that. Same with the song titles, he is in charge for almost all of them.
JS: Yes, we worried about several band names and made it No Respect For Beauty. For the titles, in the process of making a song, usually we all three think about with what kind of feeling we make the songs, and with that feeling I’m building the title in the end.
Q: You formed in August 2010, how did you 3 meet and come together?
HS: On the site M****…
JS: You have to call it certain site M.~
HS: Hahah~ yes, I uploaded a post on a certain site M that I want to form an instrumental rock band, and so we came together.
Editor: Is there a special reason for choosing that genre?
JS: We chose this genre because without vocal and only instruments it is possible to overcome the language barrier and communicate with much more people.
Q: How did you start with music? I’m curious about the opportunity that made you learn an instrument for the first time.
WY: I started to play an instrument when I first listened to foreign rock bands during middle school and wanted to try to play an instrument myself.
JS: My mother did classical music, so since I was small I came in contact with many classical instruments and listened to a lot of music, but when you’re small and you’re made to do it, you hate it. So I had no feeling for the classical instruments and music. But then I came in contact with rock music and it gave me a fresh feeling. The look and the sounds of the instruments, they all came with a new feeling. So I said ‘Let’s make a band with friends!’ and learnt from then on guitar.
HS: Instead of math or English schools, my parents sent me to arts and sports schools when I was young.* So after going to calligraphy schools, schools of fine arts etc, I started to learn drums from middle school on and kept it until now.

Q: How did you produce your album’s jacket image?
HS: An artist drew us a picture with an image that fitted well with the music.
JS: Ah! Woo Young draws well. He was a potential candidate as jacket picture maker… I don’t know how the next album will turn out.
WY: If they want a lot of money, I’ll try to draw next time. Hahaha
Q: Please talk about the songs on your album.
HS: Out of the songs we made, ‘uncanny’ and ‘day of departure’ are the two oldest. So we’re a bit more attached to them.
WY: For the bigger part of the songs we suffered when we made them, and while recording we got entangled in difficult love and hate relationships in several ways.
JS: To me it seems each kind of music has its different reason for attachment. ‘I am a shadow’ is a song we took the most care of to take it into the main spotlight.
HS: It feels like we never performed without that song.
Editor: On youtube the song is there the most often, so I heard it a lot too~
Q: Aside from music, are there other activities you like? You said Woo Young’s hobby is to draw?
YW: Ah, drawing is my hobby, but a bit scaled down. If one night it’s like ‘it comes!’ then I draw. Hahaha. It’s not a constant hobby. Aside from drawing I like to read the manga ‘Ironfist Chinmi’ and I still enjoy it. Even if I have read them all, I read them out of a habit. Since I read them since a long time ago, I read them when I search for mental calmness(?). Hahaha.

JS: I basically don’t have an active personality and like to stay home, so I like things like watching movies at home or reading books. And I also like cats. I like their looks and the feel of their hair. I don’t like their prim personality, but… if it’s a cat that listens well when one calls her, I like her. Hahaha.
WY: A dogcat*?
JS: Hahaha! I like cats and home, but on the other side I also like traveling. I don’t like to travel constantly all the time, but I think traveling sometimes somewhere is quite fascinating.

HS: Yes, since I’m still in my 4th year (of university), I have to do band and school together, so my schedule is packed. Because of that it’s difficult to have other hobbies, so I like to stay at home. Home is the best, right? Today I also came right from class, it’s hard~
Editor: The new students are year ’12*, right? How are the freshmen?
HS: The new students? Haha, because it feels too distant between me and the freshmen… hahaha
Editor: When you go to school, don’t the juniors recognize you?
HS: There absolutely is no such thing. When I told my friends that I released an album, they thought it’s a workplace band, haha. I just didn’t explain. When they hear my music later coincidentally, I want to deliver the music as it is.

Editor: I know that Woo Young and Jun Seok graduated last month. How did your friends or acquaintances react when your album was released?
JS: My parents don’t show their feelings, but my uncle talks about it a lot in the neighborhood.
WY: Our all parents also come to our performance places once each and support us a lot.
Q: Who are the musicians you like?
JS: You mean the national and international singers we like the most, right? Every time we get those questions we really get in trouble. Even if we’d stay awake day and night it would be not enough, it’s such an enormous question. Haha. But if we had to choose one each, I like Lena Park whom I liked since high school, and the British band called Porcupine Tree.
WY: The albums I bought for the first time since I was born were, Korean, Sinawe, and foreign, Judas Priest. I like them, but since they’re albums I own for a long time already, I’m attached to them, so I’ll choose those two.
HS: I like Leessang! I think that since the first album there was a feeling of a musician coming from Gil. All their music is good. Outside of Korea I like Underoath with their strong feeling the most.
Q: Your name is so long, so there seem to be a lot of fans in the internet who call you by a shortened name.
JS: They call us by various names. When we made our Twitter domain, we wanted to have it NoRespectforBeauty, but we exceeded the number of possible letters, so we made it NRFB and seeing that, they also call us NRFB…
WY: There are a lot more aside from that.
HS: NoRespec, NoReBeau, NoRefobeau, NoRefo, NoRepec, NoRes… Hahaha, the fans sorted it and uploaded it to our café. Asking what we like the most haha
JS: What we like the most is… No Respect for Beauty, right~
Q: You communicate with your fans over Twitter and in fancafés, it’s nice to look at~
WY: Because they’re fans we’re thankful to for liking our music, we don’t miss one post in our fancafé, read them all and write all comments.
Editor: I got to know through the No Respect for Beauty SNS that your 1st album was chosen as recommended album for the music awards and that you passed the 1st round of the Top Band auditions. Because they can hear the news fast, the fans surely really like it too.
HS: I think the communication with the fans is important. And more than the expected response of our fans, we’re really thankful for always giving us more love.
Q: You have been wearing fitting t-shirts, how did you get that idea?
HS: The Korean and foreign band cultures are different, but it’s not that we think it is better. One of those things in foreign band culture is that they take effort to get their band known; after a performance, they walk around carrying albums, stickers or badges of the band and also sell them. In Korea there’s still not much of that. It’s a pity. There are probably not a lot of Bands in our country who wear t-shirts with their band name written on it to performances. Because we want to get closer to the fans at least a little bit, want us to get known, we wondered how it would be to wear a self-produced t-shirt and made them.
JS: I like it, it’s smart and we don’t need to worry ‘what are we going to wear today’.
HS: Hahaha! But because we are wearing the same design for every performance, we’re thinking about making a new design this time.
WY: Maybe it ends up being a design drawn by me… hahaha.
Q: No Respect For Beauty’s dream?
HS: We want to try everything we didn’t do yet. We experimented a lot until now. We also tried to perform in the outskirts, a forest or on a cruise, it was a special experience. To make a good album and do constant activities is also a goal, but at first the band’s true color and value of existence will appear when a lot more people hear our music. So we want to let more people hear our music and listen to their reactions to it. So our goal is it to let as much people as possible listen to our music. So it feels like we can accomplish this dream when we work hard to perform at more places, to show much more, so we always perform keeping this in our mind. We don’t hope that the words people want to tell us, who come in contact with our music for the first time, are only praise. But we want a reaction. It doesn’t matter if it’s praise or critique, but we want them to hear our music and give us a lot of responses. Please listen to it! Also, improving more and more, in each country there are one or two bands we like. So later we want to become a band that can represent Korea and performs together with those bands while traveling around the world.
Q: Lastly, please tell the members of ‘1300K - Jukebox’ your future plans!
HS: In April is the Top Band Audition round 2.
JS: We participated last year at the EBS Hello Rookie, and with one appearance you can get a really lot of feedback.
HS: Back then we felt how great the power of the broadcast is. This time too with Top Band, the broadcast didn’t even started, we’re still going through the auditions, but people who heard only that come to our performances; the power of publicity is really strong~ we thought.
JS: So since then we thought that we definitely need to go to such public broadcasts. With the thought that Top Band is really the last chance of a public broadcast, we’re preparing earnestly.
Editor: I heard that you perform together with Pg.lost who have a national tour in Korea next month!
HS: Last January I went onto the Pg.lost facebook page and, here in Korea there was no talk about it that time, but it said they will come to Korea. So I asked Jun Seok, because he speaks English well, to write a mail to Pg.lost.
JS: At first we started mailing them asking where they perform and when, but then they asked a lot more back. How the situation of the performance places is in Korea, the way of distributing albums, etc, talking about this and that, we came to perform together.
Editor: Woah! The way you reach your dreams is really stylish! And to that in English!
HS: Looking at our mail exchange, it feels like looking at a discussion workbook, hahaha.
WY: He exchanged mails with them and we learnt from that… Hahaha
JS: We’re having the national tour from April 3rd to April 8th.
Editor: How do you feel?
JS: Since it’s also for us the first time to have a national tour, it is half anticipation half worries, but it seems like it will be fun. Because Pg.lost is one of the bands we all like, we did think about wanting to perform together with them, but we couldn’t even dream of them coming to Korea, and we just had the dream that later, if there’s the chance and we get to go to Sweden, that it would be nice to perform with them, but we came far faster together with them than we thought.
HS: After that we have to go together with them when we go to Sweden!
