le art show.

My friend Gerald had an art opening last night in Chinatown.

I didn't realize he was so good.

Every single painting sold before the show was even put up, I found out later that evening when I casually asked how much a particular painting cost that I liked.

"9000.00", said his girlfriend..."But there are 2 problems with your request: The first is that the painting is already sold. ALL the paintings are already sold. The second is that the painting only comes as a pair with the one beside it, and the one beside it is also 9000 dollars."

"Yeah, and there's a third problem, now that I have this new information. I don't have 18000 dollars on me."

"That's 3 fairly large obstacles", Jen said, "I guess you better really want that painting to overcome all of them"

"I'll pass for now," I said.

Good ol' Gerald is doing well. But it makes sense. He really HAS something. He did this one painting of a young teenage girl seen close up in the crotch as if you had X-ray vision. You could see underneath her jeans, how closely she shaved there, and her Hello Kitty underwear. It was brightly colored in pink and almost florescent green. It was gorgeous and humorous at the same time.

It was so cool to see the look on his face when I showed up. I didn't know it when I saw him because I found out he sold them all later, but he had the look of a man who had gotten away with murder and was just trying to keep calm until everybody breezed out of there.

Gerald is one of the few people I've ever met who seem genuinely from another time. You can sense that he doesn't belong in this century or country.

He is from far away. He is very skinny and looks like what I would imagine Rimbaud looked like. He has a dreamy quality and is funny as hell.

His girlfriend has an edge to her, however. She always looks like she's prepared to combat something you have to see, even though she's actually quite easy to get along with.

She is also a painter, so it makes you wonder how that whole dynamic is going. I don't think her work has ever been shown, so naturally she's fallen into the role of helping Gerald promote his work which, seems to be working.

Gerald and Jen live on a beautiful hill in Silverlake near their longtime friends (and friends of mine) who are also on a beautiful hill in Silverlake.

It seems like they've got eveything worked out pretty well and that's nice.

There was drawing of a little girl cutting the fins off of a fish in front of a tall window while a light breeze was blowing back the curtains around her. Outside, in the distance, you could see delicately wrought mountains. Whenever Gerald does nature of any kind in pencil, you can really see some exceptional skill happening.

I forgot how refreshing art can be.
