Walken

At dinner the other night Erin B asked about notable Christopher Walken movies. Which was interesting, because he's terribly famous, but he's one of those guys who isn't really famous for leading roles. So we sat around for a bit trying to think of movies worth seeing him in ( Read more... )

The Dead Zone was the first Stephen King book I read - I was so young that I barely understood how the sex scenes work, but the story stayed with me and I dug it back out of my parents' closet a few years later to re-read it when I started reading a bunch of his stuff. I didn't realize it was ever made into a movie, but I should check that out.
Didn't that book also get turned into either a short TV series or a miniseries as well?

Yeah, it was a movie around like 1980 and a TV series a few years ago. The TV show is crap but I like the movie a lot, it was maybe the first mainstream movie that David Cronenberg directed.

It might also be the only David Cronenberg movie that you could stand to watch, given his predilection for incredibly fucked up body-horror stuff in almost everything else he's made.

I have seen his version of the Fly, and I think the worst part of that for me was when Jeff Goldblum breaks some guy's arm while arm-wrestling in a bar. I don't think I'd developed that really strong aversion to that sort of imagery when I was in high school, though. I remember a creepy scene where Geena Davis dreams that she's giving birth to some misshapen fly-baby, but it didn't stick with me other than a general sense of grossness.

I'm determined to watch the Dead Zone now! I was trying to explain the plot to Enne last night but I don't think I did a very good job.

Yeah, this is always a tough question. I do remember liking him in The Prophecy, but despite thinking he's awesome I haven't actually seen a ton of movies with him... *peruses IMDB* Huh, did I ever watch Wayne's World 2? I don't even remember. I do remember The Wedding Crashers came on TV once and he was the only redeeming feature of the few scenes I saw.

Maybe someone just needs to string together a long sequence of Christopher Walken cameos.

Or we could just watch the Weapon Of Choice music video over and over. That works too.

The Prophecy is a weird damn movie, a B picture with a ton of acting talent in it. Walken, Mortensen, Eric Stoltz. Although I guess Stoltz was never a big mainstream guy and Mortensen wouldn't be famous until ages after. He is so fucking good in that, though.

"Of course, some of them do come to me eventually, for while heaven may be closed I am always open, even on Christmas."

Elias Koteas, too, underrated character actor.

If I was gonna do a montage of "Christopher Walken Scenes"...it would go on a long time. The trouble is there are great ones even in movies nobody has seen, like the cable TV speech in Pool Hall Junkies.

DFS.
