Oh, hmm, that's interesting, with the Zeitgeist-thing. I'd have to think on that one.

But I honestly can't think of anyone else, really, apart from the Doctor.

I wonder if perhaps pop culture - Western pop culture especially - has become too globalised/homogenised these days for one particular zeitgeist figure to emerge... Like, most British people probably consume more American fiction than they do British and the current American crisis is different from the current British crisis so I don't know if one particular hero could emerge to fulfil the British needs.

BUT I'M GOING TO BE VERY INTERESTED IN KEEPING AN EYE OUT FOR ONE.

I haven't seen BBC Sherlock, but I recently went on a Sherlock Holmes spree on my Kindle (and local library, for the ones that aren't out of copyright yet). I'd like to hear about the discussions in your class - fictional heroes and the social climates that spawn them are particularly interesting to me.

Also, I would not have even thought of Holmes/HDM fusion fic until you mentioned it and I read the two examples you've given, and now I realize that I NEED MORE OF THIS IN MY LIFE. So thanks for that. :D

The thing I found most interesting - and that made me laugh 'cause I was imagining the utterly smug look on Holmes' face if he could hear - was that Sherlock Holmes was essentially a substitute for God. FOR YOU SEE, in the earliest crime narratives, pre organised law enforcement, criminality was just straight-forward Satanic influence and ultimately God would judge and punish. But the growing loss of faith, plus rationalism and scientific advancement, throws all of that in disarray in the 19th C.

Add to that the new idea that wrong-doers can be rehabilitated after their spell in prison which means suddenly people have to consider that criminality is something you can choose, rather than something the Devil puts in ya. Human evil needs human judgement. And voila, you've got yourself a Sherlock Holmes.

ISN'T IT GLORIOUS? There are more here but they're all Sherlock BBC. You might enjoy them anyway!
