But first, hey SPN folks I posted kind of dirty Sam/Dean porn the other day 8DDDD I say kind of because whilst it is certainly the dirtiest porn fic I've ever written, it is also the second porn fic I've ever written so who the fuck knows.

I'm doing a unit on Mass Market Fiction this semester, which I can't remember if I ever mentioned on here though I'm sure I've talked about it on twitter. (It is fyi basically the most glorious unit in the world as we read Mills & Boon and write chick lit and my tutor was my dissertation supervisor last semester so she already thinks I'm awesome and my classmates bring in desserts to see us through the 3-6pm seminar timeslot. Next week I'm baking cookies to bring.)

For the next couple of weeks we'll be looking at crime fiction (next week: we geek out over Conan Doyle and have a go at making our own fake blood! Told you it was awesome), so yesterday we discussed how the problems in law enforcement and justice and industrialisation and Darwinism and general cultural anxiety throughout the 18th and 19th centuries culminated in this giant gaping need for a hero like Sherlock Holmes.

Then we got slightly side-tracked talking about how social/cultural crises always seem to produce these zeitgeist figures, a la cold war superheroes etc. Something is bound to come out of everything that's happening right now, BUT WHAT? We were all struggling to think of who the current (British) cultural hero might be. The Doctor, perhaps? It will be interesting to see what tone the upcoming (SO VERY VERY UPCOMING *paperbags*) new series will have. Or, if the new series doesn't fulfil the needs of the current crisis, it will be interesting to see who is going to emerge over the next couple of years.

WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK?

On a less serious business note, I am currently totally obsessed with BBC Sherlock/His Dark Materials fusions. DAEMONS AS FAR AS THE EYE CAN SEE! With two characters as utterly nuts as Sherlock and John are, it is just so freaking interesting to see how authors play with the external animal souls THING. John looks so normal, but will his daemon reveal his inner FIERCENESS?! Sherlock occasionally deigns to play along with humanity, but will his daemon give the Something Of A Sociopath game away?! Claws at face in glee.

These two companion ficlets are probably my favourites of what I read so far, as they deal so intriguingly with what being a (sort of) sociopath and yet having an external soul thing could mean.

tv: sherlock bbc, rl: my ridiculous degree, recs, tv: dr who
