I think space travel is super cool and necessary. :( We've got to know about what's out there around us and stuff. Also NASA is hugely underfunded for what they do, they get less money than a good number of way less... savory programs and stuff. SORRY I GREW UP IN TEXAS, I'VE BEEN TO NASA PROPER A LOT, HUNG OUT WITH A LOT OF ASTRONAUTS AND MY DAD IS FRIENDS WITH LIKE EVERY SURVIVING GEM AND MERC FLYBOY. :( They are more hardcore than any Winchester could ever hope to be, seriously. ANYWAY I TOTALLY THINK IT'S IMPORTANT TO EXPLORE SPACE, which iirc is what all the old guard WANTS -- they want to go to Mars, see about habitation, terraforming, etc, but they're basically at a standstill right now. BELIEVE ME I AM ALL ABOUT FIXING OUR PLANET, AND GLOBAL WARMING, AND THE HUNGRY, AND SO ON, LOL RAISED BY HIPPIES but the money that goes to NASA seriously isn't being diverted away from more worthy causes, it's diverted away from things like LOL US NED MOAR GUNZ!!! and stuff, since it's basically a sister program to the military.
Whyyyyy is it necessary? WHY, SHOI? WHAT POSSIBLE NECESSITY CAN THERE BE D:
fyi, I now associate you perhaps irreversibly with Uncomfortable Silence With Jensen Ackles. I am imagining him going to interview astronauts when they get back down to Earth from an epic travel to Mars or some shit. And obviously by interview I mean STARE DOWN JUDGEMENTALLY.
DUDE, TERRAFORMING PLANETS? SO WE CAN LIVE ON THEM? Even if we DO manage to do something about global warming/natural resources/etc the population is expanding at a rate that doesn't look to be slowing anytime soon. It'd be nice to have somewhere to go, you know? Also, NASA does a LOT of the research and development in REGARD to issues of global warming, natural and renewable energy, and so on. They're the ones who invent things like renewable water sources and highly developed solar energy cycles, that kind of thing? They're not just about LOL PUTTIN' A FLAG ON THE MOON AGAIN.
The big reason people are like LOL W/E IT'S NOT LIKE WE'RE GOING ANYWHERE BUT THE MOON ANYWAY LOL IT'S ALL SCIENCE FICTION is because as the moon landings started tapering off a number of presidential decisions severely cut funding and public interest. Before the 60s, even DURING the 60s, the very idea of leaving the planet was this ridiculous lolworthy thing, and now we know it's not. Right now, Mars is this ridiculous lolworthy thing, but who knows what it would've been like with continual work in that direction, instead of things tapering off the way they did? And again, serious, extreme technology development! The entire "greener" living movement owes a crapload to NASA and its inventions and ideas. Technology like the lasers needed for heart surgery and things like modern day life support were invented at NASA for the purpose of space travel and then used here on Earth. Here's a big list of stuff that NASA inventions and research and funding have lead to! Some of it's kind of stupid, but some of it is super cool and necessary! Here's another link talking about the budget thing as well as the useful stuff the administration gets up to.
THE OLD GUARD ARE THE OLD SCHOOL FLYBOYS, the Mercury/Gemini/Apollo teams, everybody before the 70s! They're the ones whose names you know -- most of them do a lot of touring around when they're not working (a bunch of them are retired) and they do signings and lectures and things. They were really hardcore back in the day. A lot of them were test pilots, people willing to get into little bitty untested planes and have a go at potential oblivion just for a lark which is kind of what the space program was like back then anyway.
Also, ehhhh. Just - ehhhh. Your enthusiasm is cool but not contagious. I'm sceptical about terraforming as a viable option. I'm sceptical about EVERYTHING EVER.
I don't really expect anybody to be all fangirly about NASA, I just get kind of twitchy when people are like THIS FUNDING IS USELESS IT SHOULD GO SOMEWHERE MORE USEFUL LET'S STOP WASTING MONEY etc because really, there's more to it than planting flags in things.
YOU BETTER WATCH IT THOUGH OR I'LL GET NEIL ARMSTRONG TO CALL YOU AT HOME. :|
JUST YOU KNOW. FYI. :((((((( ILU.
