Where the sidewalk ends...

Today, Alyssa and I got up at the ripe time of 8 AM. Mind you this is our weekend, today and tomorrow. We went to Vancouver Lake Park to go on a field trip for our bird watching class. I never would have assumed that birdwatching would be so exciting and cool, but let me tell you a little bit about how sweet it really it is. Today we saw three bald eagles. That's pretty bad ass, considering there are like 1,400 or something like that in the state of Washington. We saw a red-tailed hawk and many other varieties of thrushes, sparrows, swallows, and warblers. The scenery was beautiful. The sky was blue with the sun out, however there were still many clouds, but not enough to disguise Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Adams. The colors that sun cast on all the trees was very illuminescent. It was this bright orange-red, almost a burnt color on all the trees, but with the blue background everything just lit up. It was absolutely sweet. Garter snakes were galore, I think I may have seen a chickadee as well, not to mentions like fifty american robins, but that is no big deal because they are stinking everywhere. We drove to the wildlife refuge viewing area about 5 miles away from Vancouver Lake Park and it just dead ends. Then you get out and walk because the road closed and like I said, it dead-ends. It's very interesting because off to your right there is this big open field with wet marshland in the distance and then to your right is a river with large chunks of the road fallen into it. You could even see the painted marker lines for the shoulder on some of the street that had broken off. Then as you walked further, some fence had been laid in the middle of the road, probably to warn strollers so they don't collapse into the river with the roadway. It was a really grand experience and I think that Alyssa and I will go back just because of how beautiful the area was and how many birds we did see. Next time we may go to a place called Frenchman's Bar and check that out which is a ways away from Vancouver Lake Park.

This weekend is going to be incredible. Tonight I am going to see my favorite current band, The Appleseed Cast play with Rocky Votolato, Minus the Bear and Crystal Skulls at the Loveland. It is going to be absolutely entrancing. This will only be the second time I've seen the Cast. Then we'll go to bed early, wake up early to go river rafting with Alyssa's uncle on some river east of Salem, OR. And to top it off for the next week I am housesitting and dogsitting for a beautiful Northern Red Golden Retriever. We're talking pure bred baby! If any of your weeks or weekends are better than this, go ahead and comment. But this is the stuff.
