Fandom Appreciation 2013 - Challenge 4

Apr 13, 2013 23:38

DAY 4: Send positive feedback to two fannish community
moderators, challenge organisers, newsletter compilers or archivists.

Bonus challenge for 5 points: Rec a fannish comm or archive on your journal.

Challenge: Completed
Bonus: Completed

I. BookemDanno.Net (Hawaii Five-0, all)
This letter/positive feedback went out not only to the website (which is managed as unbiasedly open to all characters, ships, and actors) but, also, especially, to the moderator/owner of it all, who has been under fire so much lately, from fans and specific persons from TPTB, and not acted out once in a public forum in a way that hasn't shown remarkable grace and aplomb in the face of great adversity/restriction to personal freedom.

Because that, people, is how you do it. Because the sunny days we all get to laugh together are amazing, but the shitstorms are where you learn who you truly respect and venerate as being the bigger person and the right kind of point people in a fandom.

II. Fandom Calendar (All Fandoms)
Oh, gods, where to even start. If you aren't following Fandom Calendar, you should be. I didn't even know I hadn't friended it with my actual journal until tonight, but it's been on my RSS feed since the moment I found it back during Fandom Snowflake Challenge. This is the place I find out about everything going on, all across fandom, delivered to me daily or weekly. It is the best board, in my opinions, for always being up to date on fests, big bangs, memes, cons and all other fandom activity going out there right now.

Bonus
(Aka Where I can be a biased fangril)

I. Archive: Archive of Our Own
If you don't know of them you totally should. They're front page says it all really: They're "a fan-created, fan-run, non-profit, non-commercial archive for transformative fan works, like fan fiction, fan art, fan videos, and podfic."

(And if you need an invite just hit up my comments. Here, LJ/DW, Tumblr, anywhere.)

II. Community: while we tell of Yuletide treasure (aka Yuletide)
The best, in my opinion, little now massive challenge at the end of every year for fandoms that are obscure and in need of love.

I've done this challenge for six years running, and I always love it. I love the challenge itself (highlighting and venerating under appreciated or focused on fantoms of any kind), the moderators who put in so much time/effort (with the challenge itself, with the pairings, with moving archives, with everything) and the whole yultide community on the website (that organizes books swaps, candy swaps, and does rec posts after the archive reveal every year)
