I've been mulling over the new Illyana
news.
I'm uncertain what I really think of all this.
Aside from the fact that Illyana’s outfit makes her look rather slutty. How are above-the-knee-to-lower-thigh stockings, with garters, necessary? I mean, I thought the outfit in Quest for Magik was pushing it a little bit, but I adjusted. This is just taking her outfits to a new level. You'd think they didn't like her habits from way before of either being drawn to pink when she was feeling normal, or to being utterly naked when she was the Demonchylde completely.
You know studying it, I'm not sure even that is commentary enough. When was Magik ever sold on sex appeal? With the butt cheeks that leads into the lower crease, the tail coming out from under tiniest scant of fabric and her chest--I'm not sure I even want to address that on many levels. What is with the joint armor/long gloves? And the nails. Demon yes, I get. But crazy armor pieces of not anything like her normal armor was annoy me.
(Being totally picky here, her hair is too short, too.)
It makes me very, very, unhappy as the panel preview.
Thoughts, thoughts, thoughts.
I want it now. I'm feeling dread over it already.
Five issues is forever. The wait until now has been forever.
It's ballsy to start out the second phase of her return with a rehash of Inferno in San Diego instead of New York. Its sensationalism but there is a good parallel equilibrium since it was the very last thing Illyana (still in possession of her memories and older age) did and fixed and chose how to end. It also means if they don't treat it with enough care, research, and respect in retrospect to the other, I'm going to hate this Inferno rehash.
I'd like to refute the word 'penchant' on ground of picky, too.
"That is the driving motivation in her life at the moment," C.B. Cebulski remarked. "She wants to become whole again. She's obsessed with it."
Uh. Hello. Have you read anything Illyana before now? That is sort of everyday of her life before reverting to a child post-Inferno. This is just addressing that want from the other side now--previously from the human, fear the dark side of her, now from the dark side, wanting the soul back. Handle this badly and, also, hate.
"Ex Infernus" is a deeply personal story for Colossus since it pits him against his sister, but it's also a big story for Pixie. In the "Quest of Magik" storyline.
I really don't like how Pixie heavy this is (remember my screaming about the Pixie incident in the last two issues?). The rumors of the Pixie-Kitty replacement hurt my head in vast and horrible ways. We knew Pixie was supposed to become cool and I really don't want to see this mini become Pixie saving Illyana soul. Pixie is hardly in way as important as Piotr or Kurt (and Kitty!--Dammit, Joss) and the idea that they are going to make her into a young badass makes me very nervous.
Colossus....my vote is out on. I loves him. They have black hole wide spots of blindness in the Rasputin family for each other. And yet the comics love messing with their family dynamics, magic, issues, etc. I expect mangling, and milking, or this.
Did anything make me happy, you ask?
Why, yes, there actually were some.
Nightcrawler's connections to Illyana and the realm of Limbo aren't as readily apparent. His ex-girlfriend, the sorceress Amanda Sefton, ruled Limbo for a time, and in issue #11 of his 2005 solo series, Nightcrawler came into possession of Illyana's Soulsword, which he still wields. "Amanda and the Soulsword tie heavily into the story we're telling here," Cebulski said. "This will also be addressed in an upcoming issue of 'X-Men: Manifest Destiny.'"
Continuity. Squee! I love continuity. Someone did their homework for this part. Kurt's having the sword in his series was/is part of my research and having still last had it had me praying and hoping they wouldn't magically relocate it from him. I'm ecstatically this is being looped into the story. That there are mentions because of her sucessor/usurper (Amanda Sefton) and the LS "Black Sun" and that another mini series before "Ex Infernus" will address parts of Kurt before getting to Illyana too.
This make me hopeful. Very, very hopeful
"We knew that she had to come back to the regular X-Books," Lowe continued. "So we've been building toward it ever since. We molded the end of the 'Quest for Magik' arc to set this up and started planning it. We laid out some groundwork in 'X-Men: Divided We Stand,' and voila, here we are!"
I will admit to full on fan-girl wibble at this. The fact someone somewhere has been acknowledging Illyana would have to make a full, regular return, and that there has been slow build up to it.
So consider me wary and suspicious, and, against all my best strength and wisdom and past experience not to be, glee-filled because regardless of what happens it means more Illyana in more of my comics very soon.
