A few announcements before we get to the good stuff: *groans as Camping!muse starts singing the anouncements song*
Firstly, after this chapter of Wutaiverse is finished I'm putting it on hiatus until after November. The reason is that I'm doing an complete overhaul of the Wutaiverse outline due to the fact that I created it so focused on the foursome that I've almost completely excluded all the other characters. So I'm gonna sit down and fix that for the rest of the fic, and maybe make some plans for doing rehashes of what I've already done so far. We'll see.
The reason why Wutaiverse is coming back after November is that I'm gonna give NaNoWriMo a try, I figure if I'm gonna give the Wutaiverse muses a break I might as well let the Ofic I've had bouncing around in my head for the past year and a half out for a bit and NaNo seems the perfect opportunity, (plus I can give a couple other fandoms a try at the same time).
*throws pillows at Camping!muse* Enough already! On to the fic!

1986 - 08 - Lesson Plan
The fourth Horse kata was one where you stepped towards your opponent and used broad sweeps of the sword to defend from several attacks. It was a kata that focused solely on the defensive aspects of sword work. Having already gone through once focusing on his foot work, he now watched his hands, making sure they were where they were supposed to be.
Cloud was alone in the training hall, staying long after it had been abandoned by his classmates and teachers. The room was simple wood paneling with several circles of various sizes carved into the floor. One whole wall was solid mirrors, these allowed students to watch their moments and correct as needed. The opposite wall was thick posts with removable sections between, allowing classes to spill outside during the summer. Above both mirrors and removable paneling there was a row of clerestory windows that let in most of the light, but could easily be augmented by the lamps attached to the roof beams.
To be honest, Cloud preferred to practice alone. Better to be alone in an empty room than to be alone in a crowd. Or worse, when the other students would gang up on him to ‘teach him a lesson’ and the teachers pretended they didn’t see. If he fought back he was scolded for being too vicious with the other students, if he did nothing but defend himself and got hit, the teachers would say that he was sloppy. Either way he lost.
He much preferred to practice alone, but, well, he was alone. And even Cloud got tired of it after a while.
Coming to the end of the kata Cloud ended by returning his sword to the clip on his back and bowing to his invisible opponent.
“Not bad young Strife. But you need to keep your elbows in more; it will make the wider arcs easier to manage.”
Cloud jumped, startled, he had thought he was alone, and as such had allowed his awareness of his surroundings to fade. But now he whirled, drawing his sword, automatically falling into a defensive stance as he faced the speaker.
Tall and broad, the traditional Wutaian features set on a heavier frame. The uniform was that of the Imperial Guard, those who guarded the Royal Family day and night. The insignia, and the face of its bearer, were probably the only ones Cloud could put a name to.
Shion Tsukiyomi; considered to be one of Wutai’s greatest swordsmen, Captain of the Imperial Guard, Protector and Confidant of the Emperor. Cloud had only seen him a handful of times, but would recognize him anywhere.
“Do you know who I am Strife?”
“Yes sir.” Cloud answered. Lowering his sword in his confusion, why would Shion of all people be talking to him?
“Good, then I can get to the point.”
“For the past several weeks I have been watching you. You pay attention in class, you practice whenever you have a chance-unlike you classmates and you seem to have some skill with a sword. But what talent you’ve developed, and what you are being taught can only take you so far.”
“I can teach you how to cultivate your skills, teach you the things the teachers won’t teach you or don’t know.”
“I can teach you to go farther, farther than those in charge of your training would take you. I know that you and your mother wish to return to Nibelheim one day, and remove that which drove you away; I can help you with that. I know you wish to keep the Cetra girl, Aeris safe; I can help with that as well. What do you say?”
“Why? Why help me?”
Shion closed his eyes, seeming to think Cloud’s question over.
“Because talent shouldn’t be wasted, especially since the one who holds it wishes to do so much with it, and has the drive to accomplish their goals.” Now Shion looked at him, really looked at him. “You have all that in plenty, and I would not see it go to waste simply because of your blood. Well?”
Numbly Cloud nodded, he shouldn’t, and he knew Shion was making some sort of mistake, but for now he would go along, hopefully he would learn a few things before the Guard Captain realized his mistake.
“Okay.”
Let me know what you think, hav a nice week, and yay for SK starting!
(Yes, Yes, I know. I gave him a Narutoverse attack as a surname, I couldn't resist!)
