1986 - 07 - Determination

The entrance to the Imperial Tomb was a traditional archway carved of stone. Within the opening was a maze of caverns tended to by the priests who watched over those inside. Just outside the arch was The Place of Goodbye, where the living bade farewell to those now dead. Surrounding this was The Temple of Caretaking, where the priests lived. The whole complex was right in the thick of the Royal Forest, and leading from the temple to the Royal Pagoda, was a stone road, lined with more arches, this time wooden. The road, the only way to or from the temple, was known as The Path of Sleeping Dragons.

And today, the Queen of Wutai traveled this road one last time.

Even in death Yuffie’s mother was still beautiful, laid out on the stack of wood, eyes closed, her hands crossed as if to bow. Her floor length black hair was her only cushion, the white kimono she wore hid the slash on her neck, and made her appear as if she were a ghost. The only spot of color was the jade bracelet on her left wrist, a gift from Godo when he proposed.

Yuffie paid the priests no attention as she looked at her mother laid out on the pyre. Even before this, Yuffie had known what death was. With her grandfather’s ending last year she had been introduced to it. She still didn’t like it. Still wished it had never come.

Despite understanding that her mother was gone forever, Yuffie still missed her. The sound of her gowns brushing the stone floors. How her eyes would light up whenever she laughed. The way she danced as she would poke Godo with her fan when he worked to hard.

And beside her sadness and longing, there is hate, hate for the ones who took her mother from her. Oh, she knows it was them; she overheard her father talking to his ninja, so she knows that it was Shinra that killed her mother.

All because Wutai refused to bow to Shinra’s desires, refused to be subjugated by some continental trash.

For the first time in her life, Yuffie truly understands what it means to hate.

It is when the priests stop their chants that Yuffie pays attention. Godo, reacting to some signal started forward, and Yuffie, out of reflex, followed him. Both carried a single white flower in their hands, their final goodbye. Standing in front of her mother’s pyre she looked up at Godo, to see him whispering something into his flower, his lips barely moving as he spoke.

After staring at her mother for a long moment, Yuffie did the same, cupping her hands to make sure that no one but the recipient would hear it. Finished, she stretched up to place the flower beside her father’s on her mother’s crossed hands.

She started in surprise when Godo took her hand, and gently lead her away from the pyre. She knew that at sundown the wood would be lit, as would all the other pyres across Wutai. She also knew that like this one, the others would go unwatched, except by the priests charged with their tending.

Still clutching her fathers hand as they left the temple, Yuffie’s face was dry, the tears no longer fell. For Yuffie, tonight would be the end of her morning, and tomorrow, the start of her own war.

“I swear, on my blood as Yuffie Kisaragi, First Princess of Wutai, Heir to the Imperial Throne; Those who ordered you killed shall receive like in turn.”

Yes, I know, most five year-olds aren't that smart. However, we're talking about a royal family here, Yuffie would have been raised from the cradle to be as inteligent as possible, They never would have allowed her to remain the heir if she wasn't smart. And besides, even the most average five year-old can say some pretty intelligent stuff every now and then.
