Vieques was a last minute add-on to the Puerto Rico trip, and I'm really, really glad we did it. The surreal beauty of being in the Biobay alone in the middle of the night aside, the island itself has a lot of character. Definitely going to be spending more time there when I go back.

This set is from the El Rio Camuy Cave system in Puerto Rico. It's the third largest underground cavern system, behind Carlsbad in New Mexico and Mammoth in Kentucky. And...hey. now I've been to all three.

Well, I'm in Phoenix. Phoenix is not my actual destination, but it's where I happen to be for the next forty-five minutes or so. My ultimate destination is New Mexico, but coming to Phoenix first meant saving $1,400.00, so here I am. One of the two big protective forts of the fortified city of Old San Juan, El Morro guarded the entrance to the sea. It's formidable even now -- I can only imagine what it must have been like to be on a boat for three months, or forming on the lawn outside its doors, thinking to yourself "...we're about to attack...that?"
