I enjoyed Cristina and Burke so much! I'm still pissed at Washington for getting himself fired (seriously, how hard is it to not assault your colleagues or not be a homophobic dick?) because Burke and his relationships with the other characters (Cristina and George in particular) was so great. When Owen comes on, he spends most of his time with Cristina and I hated Owen so that did not work for me.

Izzie was one of those characters that I enjoy but with a major caveat named Denny. I hated Denny then and I hate him now. Before Denny Izzie cared too deeply but didn't cross any lines. She'd be judgemental now and then on behalf of her patients (like her inability to understand why the teenager might hesitate to donate his liver to his abusive father who just killed someone) but she didn't risk her career or lives on their behalf. With Denny she broke laws, risked the lives of others on the transplant list and risked the careers of a lot of people including herself. And all because she let herself get emotionally involved with a guy she'd known, in show time, for a couple of weeks at most. It really soured me on Izzie and then the George debacle made me fast forward her scenes until season 4. Then I was able to reconnect with her and enjoy her stories. The less I say about the ghost sex the better.

I do agree that the Izzie/Cristina relationship was great. I don't want to call them friends, because they really weren't, but Izzie knew she could trust Cristina (as we saw in season 5) and Cristina was really great about putting things in perspective for Izzie. That one early episode where Izzie calls the transplant surgeons vultures and privately judges them for harvesting the organs was a great one. I loved seeing Cristina remind Izzie that many more lives were being saved/improved even though this one man was dying.

Addison's entrance was so great. I feel like all showrunners need to watch the season 1 finale as a reminder that, no, shows don't always need end of the world scenarios. Sometimes, an unexpected person coming to town is enough. And what made Addison's addition even better was that she wasn't some evil woman who swooped in to steal Derek back from Meredith. No, she completely understood that Meredith had done nothing wrong and was damn good at her job. I got a kick out of Meredith, Izzie, and Cristina (to varying degrees) loving/admiring Addison and hating themselves for it.

Good times.

(seriously, how hard is it to not assault your colleagues or not be a homophobic dick?) I KNOW, RIGHT?!! Urgh.

Before Denny Izzie cared too deeply but didn't cross any lines. and With Denny she broke laws

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a fan of the whole Denny Debacle either, BUT... Izzie officially broke the law for the first time in canon in season one, episode nine, so we can't really blame him for this particular tendency, it was well on the way to developed before he came along!!

ETA: Actually, it was as early as episode two or three of season one! As well as episode nine!

I'm an unabashed Izzieaholic and probably not the most objective when it comes to analysing her character, but I actually found her to be pretty consistently written throughout all her various storylines, and this re-watch is only reinforcing that for me.

I definitely think Izzie and Cristina would call each other friends at the moment (I'm up to season 2, episode 13). I mean, Cristina would totally have to follow up the admission with a "whatever..." but I definitely think they're friends at this point. I'm interested to see how this moves and changes because I agree that I probably wouldn't class them as such by season five.

Addie was most definitely fabulous! And I completely agree with you re. unnecessary 'end of the world' scenarios!! Though, to be fair, she was definitely in Seattle to get Derek back. I mean, she wasn't evil at all and she definitely respected Meredith, but she was clear about wanting Derek back, including to Meredith's face.

Good times. THE BEST!
