I've been listening to Elliott Smith's last album, From A Basement On A Hill, a good bit since I got it from a friend. I think its probably his best, along with Either/Or. But listening to it and its lyrics, its kinda hard to understand how his friends and people close to him could hear him do these songs live and not be worried or at least say ( Read more... )

It is a waste. However, I'm not sure he actually showed many people (if any at all) the songs on From a Basement Hill as they were still not totally finished, and I actually think they might still be his demos, so who knows.

Most of them were played live at some point or another. The ones that made it to the album were either finished or very close to being finished, it was originally going to be a double album, and the songs that weren't close enough to completion were left off. At least thats what I've gathered from interviews and a bootleg I have of one of his last shows. But yeah, few people heard the recorded versions until it was released.
