I've been listening to Elliott Smith's last album, From A Basement On A Hill, a good bit since I got it from a friend. I think its probably his best, along with Either/Or. But listening to it and its lyrics, its kinda hard to understand how his friends and people close to him could hear him do these songs live and not be worried or at least say something to the guy. I guess its a little different with hindsight, and people say how surprised they were, but come on, basically on this record he's saying in so many words "pretty soon, I'm gonna stab myself to death". Our culture has this distorted lie of the "tortued artist" and I can't help but wonder how many people die thanks to that stupid myth. "Oh, he's an artist, and artist's have that kind of depression that we can't understand or do anything about, and its sad, but thats where their art comes from...." blah blah blah, its all bullshit. I'm sure every Elliott Smith record's sales have at least doubled since he died, just like Nirvana's catalogue did, and everyone else who we wear on T-Shirts printed up before their bodies were even in the ground, as if now its somehow more meaningful now that they're dead. I really wonder how many people fall into that trap just because of how much we glorify it. What a waste.

I still haven't worked up the motivation to type up the Lucero interview again. BlogSpot has been being shitty, so I might have to make another site for this stuff. I hope not, since I know absolutely nothing about that sort of thing. We'll see.
