[Santo - Serenity]

[ master post]

This is where the magic happens.

Most people will come in through Milliways and exit out the cargo bay to go have some fun. But some might need to take detours. And of course, some people live here.

Some people work here, too -- especially if they're working on repairs.

The tall woman who steps into the cargo bay looks exceedingly pleased to be doing so, a swift grin accompanying her. She wears fitted gray trousers, dusty black boots, a purple tunic, and a vest, with at least one visible weapon (the familiar weight of a heavy blaster at her right hip) -- the uniform of the off-duty pilot. Her red hair has been pulled into a low, loose ponytail; her swagger is set to on.

(It's not often you get to do things like this, being the easily recognizable empress of a planet.)

She's looking around the cargo bay with interest, hand on her hip.

"Permission to board," River says happily, sliding the door closed behind her. The susurration of Milliways conversation cuts off abruptly, and the metal door becomes an open doorway between cargo bay and hall, its own metal door safely recessed into the wall.

"Thanks, Your Grace," says Plourr, sarcasm diluted by the way she's grinning fit to bust. "Much appreciated. What kind of ship did you say this was?"

It's debateable whether River specified or not in the first place.

"Serenity." This is the important answer.

All the same, she adds, "Firefly. Class code 03-K64 -- midbook transport. Standard accelerator core."

"Uh huh," says Plourr absently, listening as she takes in the bay. "Transport, huh? No guns on this boat?"

It's all rather less sleek and shiny than she's used to.

"It's a debate of the semantics."

Beat.

"Ain't a warship."

Everybody, says Plourr's dubious face, could use some guns on their ship, but she doesn't comment.

"So am I going to get the grand tour or what?"

"Got sidearms."

Beat.

"Yes," River adds happily, and grabs Plourr's wrist to tug her towards the hallway.

Bemused as all hell, and not shy about telegraphing it, Plourr -- who towers over the girl with the slight hand around her wrist -- allows herself to be dragged along.

"What am I looking at here, River?"

"Ship."

Duh, Plourr.

"It's the cargo bay," she adds helpfully, and lets Plourr's arm drop as she veers towards the wall.

It's a wide-open space, this room: two stories or so tall, with an outward curvature to the walls. A metal catwalk, halfway up, encircles the cargo bay, with twin stairs descending to the floor. There's a hover-mule -- a big, slightly jury-rigged transport -- chained to the ceiling, and crates scattered around. The floor is made of metal grating, with storage space below; the walls, too, are metal and metal mesh, in irregular panels.

It's one of these panels River touches now, brushing her fingers lightly over the edge before she pushes on a corner. It pivots enough for her to get a grip, and either it's lighter than it looks or River's stronger than she looks, because she tugs it easily out of the way. Behind is a dark cave of a storage niche, and some slightly dustier boxes.

"Huh," says Plourr, bending down to take a look. "Not bad." She peers inside. "I know a couple of Corellians who'd be half-impressed by this."

Fondly, "She's very sneaky."

River's fingertips ghost over the panel, the sharp-cornered edges and the textured metal beneath.

"Supply and demand," she adds. "Everybody's very law-abiding." This is said seriously and earnestly and -- really, to anyone who knows River at all, this is an and if you believe that, Santo's got some lovely bridges for sale kind of look.

"Uh huh," says Plourr, shooting River a very dry look. "And law-abiding citizens keep plenty of smuggler's compartments hidden throughout their transports."

She raps River's shoulder, comparatively lightly given her strength, as she rises. "What else is there to see, Your Grace?"

Cheerfully, "Yep."

It's a feature of the Firefly design, that's all!

"Lots," she adds, and starts towards the kitchen.

Plourr follows along easily at her heels.

If making considerable more noise than River's quiet footsteps.

Inara is in the kitchen, heating water for a last cup of tea before they get ready to go explore Santos.

She hears the footsteps approaching and looks up with a smile, curious to see who's coming with them.
