Six. Dragon Truths.

{Voice transmission. Viserys sounds completely calm, with a sort of cooing sound to his voice, like he's telling a bedtime story to a kitten.}

I never wanted to be king. I was never meant to be king. I was the second son, I was meant for other things. Prince of Dragonstone until Rhaegar's son came of age. A position on Rhaegar's small council. I ( Read more... )

How would a child grow up to be a dragon?

If my brother's children favored the Targaryen line, they would be dragons. If they favored Dorne, they wouldn't be. Honestly, no one gets this. We are not flesh-and-blood dragons. The dragon is our sigil. My ancestors raised dragons, tamed them, rode on their backs and used them to conquer Westeros. Some Targaryens have high heat tolerance. Some Targaryens are obsessed with fire. Some of us only dream of fire.

So a form of magic, then, or something carried in the bloodlines.

It's the bloodlines. We marry brother to sister, like in old Valyria. My brother didn't have a sister to marry, so he married the Dornish girl. Aegon the Conqueror married both of his sisters and got sons on both of them.

I find the idea of marrying my sister a little disgusting. There was a princess I knew once who had inbreeding in her family and it caused madness in her blood.

I find the idea of marrying my sister more than a little disgusting, namely because she's an ungrateful bitch. There was a time I wanted to marry her, or at least fuck her. Not anymore. I know where she's been. There's an old saying that the gods toss a coin when a Targaryen is born to determine whether the child will be great or mad. The smallfolk called my father the Mad King. He was a good king in the beginning. No one cares to remember the good things he did.

What good things did he do? And why did the... smallfolk call him Mad?

He got rid of the stuffy old men at court and replaced them with younger faces. There was prosperity, the realm grew rich and strong. I don't know specifics. The first ten years were peaceful, but I wasn't born during that time.

He became eccentric, I suppose that would be why. He was held prisoner for six months in Duskendale when he went to investigate why they weren't paying taxes. He wanted to rely more on himself and less on his Hand, Tywin Lannister. Things weren't the same after that. He didn't leave the Red Keep, save for very rare occasions. He took no threat against us lightly. He was afraid of being poisoned. He didn't let razors or sharp objects anywhere near him.
