I.

The first time they met he had mistaken her for the Doctor.

He had been sneaking into a warehouse that some Cybermen had holed themselves up in. He had thought he had been the only one who knew until he had stumbled across her. She had her back to him and was using a sonic screwdriver to unlock the door.

“Doctor?”

She startled and turned to face him and he realized that she wasn’t before she even said anything. There had been no sense of familiarity on her face as she stared at him. He had been disappointed; he hadn’t seen the Doctor since his brief visit at the bar.

She smiled slowly and said, “I’m sorry to disappoint you but I’m not the Doctor.” She extended her hand and he shook it. “I’m Romanadvoratrelundar but people call me Romana. Or Fred. Or Go Away.”

He found himself smiling. “Captain Jack Harkness.”

“Well, Captain Jack, what do you say we take care of these Cybermen.”

II.

After the Cybermen had been taken care of, he had walked her back to her TARDIS.

“Does the Doctor know about you?”

He felt her tense beside him but she answered, “Yes, we talked.”

He decided to drop the subject as they neared her TARDIS disguised as a phone booth. Without looking up at him she casually said, “You know I’ve never had a companion before.”

He paused for a moment before responding, “Would you like one?”

She had only laughed and pulled him inside her TARDIS.

III.

Romana had waited until their third trip to ask:

“So Jack, how long have you been a fixed point in time?”

He grinned at her. “I’m surprised you waited this long.”

“I didn’t want to seem rude.”

He told her then about his travels with the Doctor and Rose Tyler, how he had faced down the Daleks, how Rose had Bad Wolf and resurrected him when he died. He told her about being left behind on the satellite and then being stranded in the past. He told her about Torchwood and meeting the Doctor again and Ianto.

She stood still as he talked and he knew he had her full attention. As he began winding down, she met his gaze and he stared into her eyes as he finished.

III.

He learned a lot about Romana in a comparatively short time. She had a habit of raking her hand through her hair when she was frustrated. She had paced around the TARDIS, not liking to be still for too long. She always kept at least one bag of Jelly Babies in her coat pockets.

He had experienced what it was like to fall in love with a Time Lord. With the Doctor everything had been fast and exciting and he fell hard but he ended up crashing by the end.

Despite himself, he wondered what it would be like with Romana.

IV.

Romana grinned at the Siluran as he snuck up behind him and pressed his gun into his back.

“That’s what I love about you Jack: nice smile, great coat, and you always bring your own gun.”

He could feel himself start to fall.

V.

Despite his best efforts, Jack Harkness had once again fallen for a Time Lord.

A Time Lord who would be dead soon if he didn’t find her.

When he finally reached her location to his immense relief she was alive. Irritated and soaked to the bone but alive. She glanced up as he approached and she began to explain what was probably a very entertaining escape story but he wasn’t interested in hearing it.

Instead he lifted her off the ground in a tight hug and before he knew what was happening they were kissing.

She broke away first and smiled. “That was quite nice. I’ll make sure to almost die more often.”

“Please don’t.”

As they made their way back to the TARDIS, her hand found his.

Goodbye gravity, he was well and truly falling now.
