Imagine two men, after a long night of intense partying, coarse drunkenness and pyromania, wake up the next morning treading water, half-drowned and shipwrecked at sea. Eventually, two fellow seafarers come to their aid, each, respectfully, holding an outstrectched hand. The man on the right, seeing the error of his ways concerning the night before, immediately takes the hand of his rescuer, while his comrade remains in the water treading, all the while slipping deeper past the crest of the waves. As he rests in the boat, calmly trying to rehydrate and reheat his body, the rescued man looks toward his comrade in the water, who seems to ignore the calls and the outstretched hand of his willing rescuer. Stating that he is low on gasoline, the captain of the ship cries out to the man in the water, telling him, 'My friend! Take heed and enter the boat, or face being lost forever! We have enough fuel to reach shore, and only that! We have no more time! Make your decision!' The man in the water, whom we have affectionately referred to as 'comrade,' still seems oblivious to the situation and people around him. As the boat takes off toward the nearest island, the rescued man turns back toward his comrade as he is fading into the horizon. Throughout the impending cerebral conflict, he assures himself that the right decision, on his part, was in fact made. Furthermore, he concludes that the most egregious difference between men is that some will allow themselves to be rescued, while others will see fit to drown.
