a lot has happened in the past month, but i haven't had the time/energy to post. i still need to put my pictures from philadelphia on my journal, but that will have to wait until tomorrow.
so, the weekend after we got back from spring break, cameron and i went to his school's prom. we took a limo with three other couples, plus one guy that didn't have a date. the girls that his friends went with were definitely eccentric--i usually enjoy eccentric people, but they were somewhat annoying attention whores. anyway, cameron and i actually DANCED a lot and i saw lots of people i went to school with in 1st-4th grade. i transferred to my current school for 5th grade while many of my friends continued to stay at the same school until high school. many of them then went to the all-girls catholic school (cameron's school is the all-boys catholic school). so yeah, i saw lots of people that used to know me when i was nine, and seeing people that knew me back then is always a little nostalgic because i've changed so much.
all the fine arts in upper school traveled to tulsa, oklahoma on april 7th for a "fine arts festival." lots of the private, non-catholic schools in dallas, new mexico, louisiana, and oklahoma go every year (but it's held at different schools). next year it is being held at our school but i won't be there. anyway, it was surprisingly fun. it's basically just a bunch of artsy kids hanging around and performing. we did our fall concert and "disney dazzle" where we dance and sing to like 10 disney songs. we stayed in a nearby hotel and of course, there were many funny moments. i also have pictures from there, so maybe i'll post those too.
my prom was last weekend and it couldn't have been better. for the first time, i got my hair done in an "up do" which was painful but pretty. i went over to my friend krishna's house a few hours before the dance and she helped me do my makeup and get ready. because our plans to rent a limo fell through, cameron's uncle rented the two of us a jaguar and chauffeured us around all night. he was even wearing a tux and insisted that we refer to him as "edward." everyone came over to krishna's house because she has the perfect "prom stairs" and then we headed off to the dallas country club. our theme was "copacabana" and so there was salsa music, fake palm trees, and neon lights everywhere. we ate dinner, danced, gambled, and danced some more. at the end of the night, his uncle came to pick us up and gave us wine glasses with non-alcoholic wine that he kept cold in a little cooler in the trunk. it was adorable.
the morning after prom, unfortunately, my mom and i set out for southern california. we visited the university of san diego, where i met a girl who i visited 3 classes, ate lunch, and toured campus with. 2 of the 3 professors were very strange--i wasn't used to having a teacher not know everyone in the class, especially this close to the end of the semester. in the biology class i went to, i understood what was going on because i remembered sophomore biology. they also got back their water hiakus--yes, they had to write a short poem about a property of water. they had 2 weeks to do so. around that point, i felt that the school wasn't really right for me. many of the girls are bleach-blonds and they seem to enjoy dressing up for 9am monday morning classes. high heels and skirts, etc. yuck. the campus is pretty, but it's a catholic university, and i don't feel like i would get a strong education.
after my day visit of USD, we drove up to los angeles county to visit the claremont colleges. basically, i love them. even though i got rejected from pomona, i can still take classes there if i go to scripps. i stayed overnight in the dorms and they are GORGEOUS. everything about the campus is pretty--they have their own rose garden and students are encouraged to cut flowers and take them back to their dorms, and there are also orange trees and students can eat the oranges. the girls at scripps are definitely more diverse, normal girls. although it's a small all-girls school, the 4 other colleges in the consortium make up for that. boys are in classes, in the dining hall, and can come into the dorms as long as they're escorted. i went to a "contemporary american fiction" class and the professor introduced himself to me which i appreciated. they were reading a children's book that received a newbury prize and it was interesting to listen to their discussion about it. basically, i want to go to scripps. only problem: $42,000 a year. that would be more than $160,000 by the time i graduate. they did give me some financial aid, but not much at all. i'll have to be paying off my loans for a very long time if i decide to go there. humbug.
tonight is caberet night at school where the choir will be performing solos from broadway plays and other various songs. we get to finally show everyone our lovely "disney dazzle" dance. i'm pretty excited--it's our last choir performance ever.
