Girl raped by SMS pal and his friends

RAUB: After making friends with a young man via an SMS service, a 15-year-old girl accepted an invitation to go out with him and three of his friends.

The men took her to an oil palm estate and allegedly gang-raped her there in the backseat of a car.

The Sunday incident, which allegedly occurred between 9.40pm and 10.40pm, came to light when one of the girl’s friends accidentally spotted an SMS in the victim’s cell phone that made her suspect that something was wrong.

The friend alerted the victim’s mother, who immediately lodged a police report.

On Monday, acting on the report, police picked up four youths, aged 17 to 21, to help in the investigations.

Relating the events that led to the girl’s alleged rape, state CID chief Asst Comm Narenasagaran Thangaveloo said she had befriended one of the youths through an SMS service and they then met at an entertainment outlet here.

On Sunday, she joined the youth and three of his friends for a car ride.

“They stopped at the Sungai Kelau oil palm estate, near here, and the youths all got out and left the girl alone in the backseat.

“Moments later, they came back. While one of them watched, the other three took turns to rape the girl,” ACP Narenasagaran said.

*** It was learnt that the victim had engaged in sex twice before with one of the alleged rapists. She was also said to have had sex with another man prior to that. ***

Why does the news always include this information when it comes to rape cases? The past sexual history of the victim has nothing to do with the present rape, and it feels as if the news is trying to suggest, most likely incorrectly, that the woman couldn't have been raped because she had sex with one of the rapists before, and her past sexual history has no bearing on the rape.

Contrary to the opinions of some people in this world, being sexually open does not mean every sexual advance is wanted, and just because you have had sex with someone before does not in any case mean that any future sexual advance is wanted either.

Naturally enough its the news, which tends to be one-sided, biased, especially in regards to women and rape issues.
