Today has been great, though it's by no means over - we're having the Prevo-Munsons and Dave and Deborah (separate last names, one of which I have not an inkling of how to spell) over for a really nice Christmas dinner. Unlike at Thanksgiving, we were able to find the Quorn veggie turkey loaf, which is really, really good.
Anyway. Yesterday evening, I made cinnamon rolls. Well, I made the dough, rolled it out, put cinnamon-sugar on it, rolled it up, cut it into sections, and put them on a pan, which I then put in the fridge along with a big bowl of orange-flavored icing. (Upon my beginning to make these, Mom went upstairs and got a zester, which was going to be put in my stocking, and gave it to me. Yay zesting!) This morning, at 6:45, I woke up and came downstairs to get my stocking. It was dark, and I didn't want to wake anyone up, so I left it all dark, and resultantly missed things. I found what appeared to be the empty packaging for the zester, a Clementine, our customary toothbrush and bag of chocolate coins (ah, life's contradictions), and what seemed to be a rather plain, clunky necklace - a heavy ring of metal on a rather uninspiring chain. I wondered if it really was a necklace - it seemed so odd, and felt rather utilitarian.
In the morning, we baked and iced the cinnamon rolls. Dad explained about the "necklace." It's actually an awesome, awesome magic trick - Jon got one, too. Momdad had gotten the ring from a tractor supply store, and thought it was funny that I'd mistaken it for a necklace, but I like it so much that I'm wearing it now. Also, the "empty zester package" was actually a pair of tights and an iPod skin. (Translucent iPod skin in a box looks like an empty package in the dark, okay?) I'd also gotten a lip gloss I'd asked for. And, as a defense against Jon's and my always taking their tote bags to carry things to and from school (Momdad use them for groceries; we call them "ditty bags"), Momdad had gotten Jon and me each a huge L.L. Bean ditty bag. I got a picture of me sitting in mine. I could go to sea in it. Poor Jon is feeling under the weather, but he and Dad went to take care of the Shears' dog while Mom and I walked our dogs, took cookies to our neighbors, and hung out laundry. When they came back, we opened presents.
Righto, then, my list, with comments. :) I got:
- a digital camera! I can finally put pictures of my very own on Facebook! I'm excited! :D
- the DVD of "Stardust," which I had eagerly awaited. There's always one thing I bug my parents about so much that I know I'll get it, and (aside from the many things I love about Christmas in terms of goodwill, friends, and family) I sort of see Christmas morning as, "Yay, now I get 'Stardust!'" (Well, and I love seeing people open the cards and presents I give them.) But then I always get some things I really like that I just never thought to ask for, or had forgotten I'd asked for! Momdad always have me make a list of things I'd like; "Stardust" was on the list. I certainly don't ever think I'll get everything on a given list, but it gives my parents lots of possibilities that they know I'll like (and which tend to be quite affordable, as they're mostly books, CDs, and DVDs). Still, every year they remember things I've mentioned lots of times through the year but forgotten to put on the list. The digital camera was one of these.
- plaid flannel pajamas, which are ADORABLE. Another thing I wanted but forgot to put on the list.
- one of those colonial-type (or medieval-type) candle holders with the dish and the ring you put your finger through. I've wanted one since I was a little kid, but eventually stopped putting it on the lists. Jon got me a really nice pewter one - from Colonial Williamsburg! I like it so much!
- the David Bowie CD "Low." Apparently last time we were in Richmond, Mom had forgotten to bring the list, so she was actually trying to figure out what was on it when she casually said, "So, I was surprised to see David Bowie CDs on your list - I'd have thought you'd have them all by now." HA. Naturally, that launched a whole informative monologue on David Bowie and his works, including which CDs I still didn't have, and I never suspected a thing.
- a pretty tie-dye bandana. I always liked the bandana Dad has, which is sort of tie-dyed and makes him look like a gypsy or a pirate.
- three L.L. Bean shirts (on the list), which haven't arrived yet.
- a cat-patterned dish towel, of which I now have two, and a pewter cat photo frame. I shall have a cattish home someday. :P
Yay! And everyone liked the presents I got for them. I'd ordered some of Momdad's through The Hunger Site and its affiliates, and I had a really good experience with that - they shipped ahead of schedule (I didn't think they'd be here by Christmas, but they were) and came in perfect condition, and s&h was very cheap. And of course, they're good for the world. And Momdad liked them! :) Jon also liked the CD and DVD I got him ("Toxicity" by System of a Down, for which he'd asked, and "Accepted," which I'd remembered him liking). Mom gave Jon a really cool stand she made to hold all his juggling stuff (custom-made from recycled plastic to fit the specific clubs, torches, etc. that he has).
Mom and I went for a walk on the Hampden-Sydney trails with Alyssa and her mom, and then we returned home to help prepare for dinner tonight. Dad is making a plum pudding - very impressive, and smells great; complete with holly garnish, for which I stalked the neighborhood with large scissors and a determined look, frightening children who had come out to play. I polished some of the silver and also Mom's missle case candlesticks, and the brass rings on our not-necklaces (hey, I had the polish out). I like polishing things.
Anyway, merry Christmas to everyone!
