New Amsterdam catchup

winterfish posted an interesting link about women writers in Canadian television industry.

"Bones" is coming back this week so I'll have something else on Monday nights once "New Amsterdam" ends. To my amusement, David Boreanaz is blogging about his beloved Flyers for the NHL playoffs against my local Caps. I only wish the Caps blogger was remotely interesting. (More amusing was seeing Thorsten Kaye (Zach of AMC) writing about his Red Wings. They've even incorporated his love of all things hockey into his character, which makes for fun moments.)

I caught up with "New Amsterdam". It's really a shame the show is ending so soon.

"Keep the Change" answered the questions about John's alcoholism and gave us some insight on his relationship with Omar. Supernatural fans could have answered the Robert Johnson question and then would have asked if there'd been any hauntings associated. I don't want to think about the damage to that guitar by salting it though. The image of the Winchesters coming across Amsterdam would be funny actually...

I wasn't sure whether I'd like the new sergeant. She reminded me of early Camille Saroyan on "Bones" before they really brought her into the team. The whole "This is us bonding" thing grated. The sergeant improved a little in the second appearance when she loved throwing the fed to the wolves. Does every cop have to be dirty? The Marquez family is clean so far, if not always well regarded.

Seeing the family tree in "Legacies" rammed home the point of how many lives he's really lead. From Omar's comment, we can assume John might have left them, but he hasn't forgotten them or stopped looking after them. And of course the one he loses track of turns into the Dutch Corleones with a brewery. That can't make him feel better.

I take back any apathy about Sara though. First off, you're still married. And the demonizing of the soon-to-be-ex-husband with his affair didn't help, writers. Marriages do fall apart for other reasons. I don't see where Sara is getting off asking John if he cheated before. Those questions? Those alarm bells? Should have gone off before you started sleeping with him, dear, just saying. I get that John is fixated on the whole true-love-conquers-all thing and he's probably not the best person at sharing details, but I'm having a hard time sympathizing with Sara.

"Reclassified" was a fannish homecoming of sorts. Very weird watching Kristine Sutherland (Joyce on Buffy) playing the wife of a cancer patient. If it had been Buffy, y'know we would have learned that the cop did somehow will the cancer onto himself in some supernatural fashion. Then Eddie Marquez was played by Nestor Serrano who played Bruno Dante on Witchblade. Everything comes around in fandom... I've seen 9/11 used in stories and sometimes it jangles badly (see AMC) and sometimes it fits. Whatever else, John does seem to have a 400 year old love affair of with New York, so it's natural that he'd be torn apart by what they did to "his city". The flashbacks were a little weird this time with the camera angles. I could see the "unreliable narrator" twist a mile away.

I still adore Eva and I'm glad we got a peek at her family. And that Eva was the first person John saw when he woke up...
