Fannish marathon

Thanks everyone for their sympathies and good thoughts. The first day was the roughest.

femme_fic has posted its stories and a lovely masterlist by fandom. Lots and lots of lovely fic to wade through. I've only skimmed the surface thus far.

nydia_s invited me over to her apartment for a fannish dvd marathon. I definitely needed to get out of the apartment for a little while. We wound up watching "Stargate: Ark of Truth", the last four episodes of "SG-1" season 10, and two more episodes of "Lois & Clark" season one. I probably should have watched the first two in reverse order, since I had never gotten around to catching up on those last episodes, but the little prelude included in the movie made sure I wasn't completely lost.

"Ark of Truth" finished it off with a super special magical "We have to fix it somehow" twist. Of course the Ancients built the perfect weapon and of course the Priors are all connected. But at least that's over with right? And we're just brainwashing them. It's not like they'd ever come around on their own. *rolls eyes* The Stargate writers brought it on themselves by making them so damn powerful. It did sorta prove the point about never trusting the OIA. Hello, Replicators, really really bad idea. I still liked Morgan. At least she tried to do something, unlike some of the Ancients. Cam really got beaten up in this one. I adored Vala, although one of her dresses was a little distracting. Teal'c proved he is tougher than just about anyone. He's even tougher on himself. His scene with Tomin was quite moving and interesting later when watching "Talion". Daniel got lead around by his "visions" until he got a clue. Funny how he needed to be tortured to figure that out.

I remember the grumbling at the time about those episodes, especially how the big Ori arc was concerned. And boy do I get where that's coming from. But it's telling that two of the four dealt with the two outsiders (Vala and Teal'c) feeling disconnected with SGC. "Talion" was a interesting story to watch after "Ark of Truth" and the whole "You'll never forgive yourself" speech. These days they only touch on what Teal'c was before as First Prime, what he was asked to do, what he did without questioning. Teal'c is not someone you want mad at you. I did find the whole stick fight with Arkad with one injured and the other at full strength, but it didn't matter in the end. When the IOA (them again *sighs*) was so worried Teal'c's actions would be seen as speaking for Earth, it struck he's still First Prime, just for a different group.

"Family Ties" should have been more madcap than it was. Vala has Daddy Issues. Why do all my favorite characters have them? One wonders about her mother. What struck me with Jacek was her disappointment with him stemming not so much as a bad father/husband, but as a bad thief. Vala was a professional. Aside from her encounters with the SGC, she always struck me as the type to get something done and done right. Her father tried, but he never quite succeeded. Her crack about "You can't even do a simple arms deal without screwing it up" spoke volumes about her disappointment with him. I did love the opening with Vala & Sam returning from acquiring Earth culture -- frappuchinos, Victoria's Secret, maxing out credit cards. Retail therapy at its finest! And I liked the subplot with General Landry and his family. If not a resolution, we at least see him taking the first step. Poor poor Teal'c at the end. He was so in over his head.

At first I didn't know what to think about "Dominion". I wasn't spoiled for the payoff so Vala's fall from grace was quite convincing. Granted, it was supposed to be. The Ba'al subplot was so terribly twisted, especially with the chemistry between Adria and Ba'al. (I can't like normal pairings, can I?) Vala has complicated family issues, doesn't she? Just as well Jacek never learned about his "granddaughter" or his estranged son-in-law. I'm kinda surprised the Ancients would let Adria ascend at the end. As I mentioned to nydia_s, while I love Daniel/Vala's whackiness, their softer moments are even better. They get each other, the good and the bad. Vala puts up a good front, but her friends, even Landry, sees right through her.

"Unending" struck me as the same problem as "200". The Stargate said we have an occasion so we need a special series ender, rather writing a really really good story to match the occasion. It had moments, but it also had "eh, what?" too. I love Daniel/Vala but I so wanted to smack Daniel throughout that whole scene. Watching poor poor Cam going up the walls was disheartening. He's a do-er and not being able to do anything except train or run or whatever was just not enough. Sheppard would have the same problem.

Watching "Lois & Clark" was still fun to watch. My has technology changed from the dot matrix printers and massive handheld phones... Also good to catch little comics things they dropped in, like Lois' "Mad Dog" nickname. Or the running Cleveland jokes. Or Clark's address, which I recognized immediately. Someone clearly did read the comics, even if there were other bits that felt out of place. Still don't like this version of Jimmy. More please!

stargate, pairing: clark/lois
