Media West fannish recap

May 29, 2006 22:34

Apologies for anyone who sees this crosspost from hildy:

For those who are just returning or need to catch up, the full day reports:
Media West Day 1/2
Media West Day 2
Media West Day 3
Home again
And one post in this journal

In general, it was a quieter MediaWest this year. With travel and gas costs and economy being what it is, I presume there were a number of regulars who simply couldn't make it. They also might have been at other cons. I suspected a lot of HP people were waiting for Phoenix Rising. The zine tables seemed smaller. It used to be there'd be large tables of nothing but zines. And not as many appeared to be advertising either. I wondered if they were simply sticking to their core audience. I saw one more Atlantis zine starting up called Gene Therapy.

Fannish vids

Two hours of gen vids and a hour of slash vids. I was actually asleep before midnight, which is a rarity. Broke my heart in a million bitty pieces with the tribute vids when John Spencer came on screen.

Panels

I attended three Doctor Who panels, including a Captain Jack one and 9 versus 10 discussion, plus the general discussion one, all extremely well attended. The SGA Het panel was more reasonable than I expected, talking all or most characters in turn and ask who have they been paired with. John/Elizabeth seemed more popular than John/Teyla, but no one thought itd ever go anywhere, because of the way Elizabeth was. Same seemed true of most of the women in Atlantis. They're all in positions of certain amount of trust and power. Teyla is bound by the expectations of her own people. Heightmeyer is bound by her ethical constraints. I felt rather odd with my allegiance to McKay/Cadman, much less telling people about oddball_sga. What happened to that nice canon girl you can take anywhere?

Hot fandoms
For a change, I was actually in the big fandoms this year, namely Atlantis and Doctor Who. Doctor Who was slowly picking up steam. If Sci Fi actually picks up the second season, it could be explosive next year. Everyone seemed to have or want merchandise from those shows. I wish I had found an official SGA t shirt design I liked for Atlantis.

WTF
One of the regular vendors mentioned they didn't bother to bring pictures for the new SG-1 characters actors because they'd been told no one was interested. Which annoyed my friend suzy_queue who has fallen for Vala. I understand the loyalty to the older characters, but my god do you have to be so flipping blatant?

The fannish loot:
No zines surprisingly. Several beckoned but nothing grabbed me.

A Sheppard picture to fit into my badge lanyard. It kept flipping over and showing the older one I had of Giles.

A bunch of stills, including two of Elizabeth Weir, one of John Spencer as Leo, one of Cyclops, and one of Ben Browder in SG1 and one lone small picture of John/Elizabeth.

A John Sheppard notebook and Atlantis bookmark

A Cameron Mitchell t-shirt and ordered a John Sheppard t-shirt. The latter were extremely popular. When I asked for one, the vendor sighed and said why wasn't she surprised? Those disappeared almost before she could put them down.

A Witch Hunter Robin t-shirt I hadn't seen before. Manga was a new and popular sidelight in the dealer's room, usually a small selection of the shounen-ai/yaoi titles.

A Doctor Who button made by maureen_the_mad off an icon I had created spoofing the similarities to Buffy. (neadods had the idea for turning it into a button, but Mo had the button maker.)

A Heather Dale cd Road to Santiago
