This is something I've missed: that Bohr's model becomes the exact quantum description of an H atom when the number D of dimensions increases to infinity. The solution at finite D can be expanded in powers of 1/D and then scaled back. See p. 35.

Apparently, Bohr's models for He, H2+, and H2 also represent the correct high-D limit, and further corrections can be made using the standard perturbation theory and expanding in 1/D.

It appears that what Bohr discovered a century ago was dimensional scaling!
